I know it's inescapable, but I really don't like the LOTR comparisons. It really is not the same at all, other than a battle with mystical creatures.
The better comparisons are Peter Pan, Holes, and other adventure/fantasy films whose primary target audience is 7-12 year olds.

I enjoyed it. It didn't quite have the Wow factor that I was hoping for, and some of the effects shots didn't work (there are a few in particular that are astonishingly dodgy), but I did enjoy it. Great performances from Tilda Swinton and the kids playing Edmund and Lucy . And the central scene at the Stone Table really was well-done. All in all, it worked for me. Would have liked it to be a little better, but it's still really good. I'll be buying it.

Brandon: It's inescapable
The basis for any comparisons lie with the viewer. I'm comparing them simply because they're the two first fantasy stories to really affect me, years ago. I never cared for Peter Pan, I'm afraid.

Man, an hour wasted on this sig! Thanks, Toshiba! :p

I agree Brandon. I think that is one reason I was a little disappointed in the film. I have seen many comparisons made on various forums and the usual LOTR vs Narnia fan arguments. For someone who hasn't read the Narnia books; all this was misleading. I went in expecting something like LOTR and got something more like Peter Pan. Not saying that is a bad thing but it took me by surprise and just wasn't what I was looking for. I still enjoyed the film but was just a little disappointed in it. I don't get the comparisons, they are nothing a like IMO.

Just to be clear, I do mean the 2003 Peter Pan. That film is the gold standard for children's cinema for the past 5 years, IMO.

Don't get me wrong - screenplay-wise, I think the film is great. I wouldn't compare it in that way to LotR unless it were favorably.
On the production/direction/FX side, I simply compare it to LotR because it is an epic fantasy film with many of the same elements.

Saw it today and quite enjoyed it. I don't let less-than-perfect FX bother me as much as it seems to bother others, because they are not, and shouldn't be, the focus (as too many seem to forget). I agree with the comments about the fine performances from Tilda Swinton and the kids, especially the girl who played Lucy. Her performance perfectly expressed that childlike sense of wonder that's so nice to experience.

Didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did! Really good movie. And I've got to commend the voices and performances of the talking animals... usually any movie that features talking animals comes off as terrible... but this is one of the few cases where it really works. I especially liked the Beavers and Wolves.

It was ok... a few things bothered me...
1: why were none of the children breathing cold air? cut back on special effects?
2: the kids would have died on pneumonia in that water
3: I dislike the actress playing the witch. I also disliked her acting in the beach with de caprio
4: the older sister is a terrible actress.
5: kids ALWAYS look goofy in armor and it ruined the mood of the film for me
Now the things I enjoyed:
1: nice effects
2: nice music
3: I loved the lantern right outside of the wardrobe and the snow blowing around it, just set the mood right
4: Mr. Tumnus, brilliant
5: I am the opposite of most on the forum, I prefer the first half of the film rather then the last half

Lo, there do I see my mother, and my sisters, and my brothers, Lo, there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning, Lo, they do call to me, they bid me take my place among them, In the halls of Valhalla, where the brave may live...

Took my 9 Year old daughter to see it today. Like some other people have said, I enjoyed it but came out a little disappointed. I haven't read the books and after seeing the trailer, I was expecting something similar to LOTR. I thought the acting was great and the cgi was top notch. I really liked the wolves and the frozen river scene.
I had to keep reminding myself this movie is geared to the 11 and under crowd. LOTR is geared to 12 and up. Like I said, I really enjoyed it but like someone else said it just didn't have that "wow" factor. I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the series.
One thing I didn't get. I'm kind of surprised the Snow Queen failed to know the whole prophecy. She had total control of Narnia, you'd think she'd know that prophecy inside and out so as not to lose it.
