Patrick Wilson can sing, act and looks the role so he should be very good.
If I were casting I'd choose Anne Hathaway over Katie Homles. Anne seems a better fit, but then I have seen their tests.

According to this article at Playbill.com:
Quote:
|
Scottish actor Gerard Butler has been offered the starring role in the Joel Schumacher-directed movie musical of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. Anne Hathaway and Emmy Rossum are among the top candidates mentioned to star opposite as Christine, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
|
Not what I expected. I'll say this at least - Schumacher isn't exactly going for box office security with his casting choices so far.
The article doesn't mention if Katie Holmes and Charlotte Church are still in the running for Christine.

Banderas is fantastic in Nine, but the real scene-stealers are Jane Krakowski, Mary Stuart Masterson (who knew she could sing?) and, of course, Chita Rivera. Overall it's a great production, even if, like me, you don't think it's a great musical.
I could have done without the flooded stage in the second act. Sitting in the front row, you feel like you're in the splash zone, though in fact we never got wet. I blame Stephen Daldry (now better known as the director of The HOurs). Ever since his staging of An Inspector Calls about 10 years ago, every major Broadway production seems to have major water effects at some point.

But don't the water effects in Carrie: The Musical predate that?
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts on Nine. It was worth waiting a month or so for them, because I agree completely.

According to Variety, the role of Carlotta has been given to
Ms.
Minnie
Driver
--I'm a big fan of Minnie and I haven't seen much of her lately so I'd consider this good news.
Opinions of those who've actually seen the Broadway Show (I have not) would be greatly appreciated. Is Minnie a good choice?

Carlotta isn't really all that big of a part. I guess I'll spoilerize this:
Driver does have a good look for the part as she'd be easy to make into that victorian (or whenever) era prima dona look. I've never heard her sing though so I'd suspect there might be some dubbing going on there.
Please god DO NOT let Charlotte Church be in this film. Granted, I haven't heard her recently, but her voice was exceedingly juvenile the last I heard of her (which admittedly is a while). Christine has to start out weak and grow to be amazing vocally through the course of the show.

I just want great singing - if they can accomplish that with big names like Banderas or Jackman, fine. I saw Phantom three times at the Ahmanson (once w/ Michael Crawford, twice with Davis Gaines) and loved the power of their voices, that to me is the strength of Phantom as a musical.
I'll reserve judgment on Schumacher until I see the finished product...

Re: Minnie Driver as Carlotta. If her singing in GoldenEye was a true representation of her vocal talents, this could be scary. Hopefully she was intentionally singing horribly in that role.

PHANTOM is playing Seattle again at the end of September and I'll be taking the wife to see it; she dragged me to see it a few years ago and I was surprised at how much I liked it. As far as the movie, at least we'll be able to hear the music in 5.1 for the inevitable DVD release.

And you believe, at heart, everyone's a killer...

She's doing theatre now - she's in London at the moment, starring in David Mamet's Sexual Perversity In Chicago opposite Matthew Perry. She has a movie coming out soon called Ella Enchanted that I know nothing about, except that it's from Miramax.
Anyhow all the leads are cast for the Phantom movie. Patrick Wilson as Raoul and, according to Playbill.com, "16-year-old Emmy Rossum will play Christine opposite 33-year-old Scottish actor Gerard Butler as The Phantom."
