And Y Tu would have had to be submitted for LAST YEAR as a FF if I understand the rules correctly (and it wasn't). I think FF submissions are based on theatrical release in the home country, and Y Tu was a 2001 film for Mexico.
It's 2002 US RELEASE gave it eligibility in the other catagories.
Take a look at when Amores Perros was released in Mexico and then at which year it was an Oscar FF nominee.

That's right USA Today got it 5/5. I actually deviated from that formula by going for my guts by replacing GONY with Adaptation.

Ha, isn't it funny how no one is wondering about the dissapearance of About Schmidt? I have been rolling my eyes at every inclusion of that thing in the BP category.
The story of Talk to Her was great, but I saw nothing particularly award worthy in it's direction, not more than in TTT anyway. Which leads me to wonder what criteria are used for the BD Award.

BTW, Talk to Her and Y Tu Mama Tambien are basically getting the Academy's recognition outside of their own countries FF submission "mistakes".
Not that the films don't deserve their noms, but I really do think that many voters saw these spots as a chance to say "yes, we recognize the quality of this film even though we can't vote for them as FF".
Y Tu was passed over as Mexico's 2001 FF entry IIRC. I don't remember what Mexico submitted as a 2001 film (Amores Perros was the 2000 nominee and lost to CTHD).
Talk to Her has been a big controversy because it was not submitted by Spain (their submission of Mondays in the Sun was not nominated). Everyone was upset by this choice (which as due to moral issues with the film IIRC).
Also, MEXICO'S entry was nominated...but their 2002 submission is Crime of Father Amaro.

I'm really not all that surprised PJ was "snubbed" on TTT. It certainly is much more of an action flick than the first part and doesn't have the emotional resonance at the end as ROTK will have, which is where PJ will shine and earn his sweep next year (And I swear, if ROTK doesn't sweep next year I will MURDER!!!!!)

Really, I thought the last time we looked at it that they had Far From Heaven and About Schmidt in and TTT out. I hadn't looked in awhile.
This was on Jan 18th at least...
Chicago 128
LOTR: Two Towers 121
***About Schmidt 111
***Adaptation 111
***Far From Heaven 111
The Hours 111
The Pianist 111
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 86
Gangs of New York 74
I see that after the Guilds finished that they did have 5 for 5 (of course so did HTF group poll, right?). Not knocking them on results, but these results were being predicted back when they had the above list running. I think if you throw out all the critic lists and you would still come up with the above list.
I mean, didn't the BIG 4 Guild theory prove just as strong, and basically shows that the Flordia Critics or whatever have little bearing on the correct outcome (versus the Guilds as indicators).

I don't understand how Peter Jackson didn't get nominated for another segment of ONE film!!!!!

You and me both buddy.
Oh and Minority Report should replace Spider-man for best visual effects.
Disappointed to see Serkis not at least getting a nomination (knew it would never happen though).
I don't think I'll be watching them this year...I already know the results, or at least the one's I give a rat's ass about

Surprised to see the Academy nominate only 3 in the VFX. Minority Report did not rank high enough for them to even flesh out the number of competitors to a more respectable 4?
And is Jack still the favorite, carrying momentum from the GG? Or does the lack of Academy accolades for About Schmidt tilt favor toward Daniel Day Lewis?

On my personal predictions, if I recall correctly I think I got 4/5 for BP, 5/5 for actor, 4/5 for actress, and 3/5 in both the supporting categories.
