In reference to our recent discussion of Werner Herzog and his love of 'different shoots' I thought you guys might be interested to hear about his latest project.. Involving Loch Ness.

I've put together another thread for the news -

Finally got to finish The Best Years of Our Lives (A-). I thought it was a great watching a movie about returning servicemen made right after the time of their arrival. I don't think i have seen any other movies about the same thing.
That brings my number to 69

Sorry, another miscount. I had missed Remains of the Day somehow.

142 watched
198 left to watch

"Movies should be like amusement parks. People should go to them to have fun." - Billy Wilder

"Subtitles good. Hollywood bad." - Tarzan, Sight & Sound 2012 voter.

"My films are not slices of life, they are pieces of cake." - Alfred Hitchcock

The Lakers may have sucked this year, but at least they didn't suck as much as the Spurs.

The Man with a/the Movie Camera

I can appreciate the historical importance of this film, and it's impact on editing, etc., but as a film itself, this experiment only proves that no dialogue and no plot isn't a very good way to make a movie.

Lawrence of Arabia (revisted) (Technical: A+) (Content: A-): Ran over to a local theatre when I found out they were playing this. Not sure whether it was it being my second viewing, seeing it on the big screen, or seeing it with an audience, but I enjoyed it a lot more. I still feel the desert travel scenes are a bit overdone in the first half. Now my only question is whether to buy the current two disc special edition, or to wait and get the just announced Superbit.

North By Northwest (Technical: A) (Content: B+): Wow, the best James Bond film ever, and it's not even a Bond film! I can't put my finger on why exactly I liked it so much though, just all around extremely well done. I felt the second half dragged a tiny bit, and the ending was a bit sudden. My first full viewing of a Hitchcock film, and now I'm ready for more!

Apocalypse Now (Techincal: A+) (Content: D): This film exemplified everything I dislike about war movies. Completely unsympathetic characters, an extremely simple plot, and a "message" that doesn't interest me in any way. (Note: I watched the original theatrical cut, not the extented "Redux" version. And I don't plan on revisting an even longer version of a movie I disliked so much, got way too many left on the list to see )

Pakeezah (Rating: N/A): Am I a shallow American? Maybe, but I only made it through about thirty five minutes of this before I had to turn it off. The style is just too foreign for me (no offense to India, Indians or fans of Bollywood), and the story didn't seem interesting enough for me to stick with it.

Brook,

Is that in regard to Matthew, or my post above that?

I had posted in response to you and then remembered I was trying to be more calm and understanding so I edited and didn't just want to leave a blank post. (actually it was a bit of a joke but I think only you would have taken it in the spirit intended).

It could also apply to Matthew, who, if Pakeezah is "too foreign", I'm afraid I'm going to be reading that same review about 200 more times.

I started watching Contempt last night but fell asleep. I've had this problem a lot lately. Is there such a thing as adult-onset Narcolepsy? I was ready to watch 2 or 3 movies last night and ended up asleep before 10.

No, but there is such a thing as Godard-induced Narcolepsy.

Don't worry, if it gets up to about 50 I'll chuck this list and move over to the AFI one.

FYI, I already know I like Japanese, Chinese, Korean and French cinema, so we'll see what I think about films from any of those countries on the list. I've also got Pyaasa recorded, so I'll be giving Indian cinema another go.

Moving on...

Blade Runner (Technical: A++) (Content: C): This was the first movie I sat all the way through completely because of the visuals, cinematography and art direction. The characters were shallow and undeveloped, the story could be summed up into about a sentence without losing any of it, and the world could have used a bit more fleshing out, but none of that matters. The atmosphere, the style, the setting is well worth seeing the film for. And I didn't think the story was particularly bad, just nothing special.
