This question is for a friend of mine. I couldn't answer her question so I thought I would get it from the experts on this website. Can you buy a head unit that doesn't require the antenna to function and go up and down.

If you don't want the antenna to go up/down you just don't connect the power antenna lead on the head unit.

Will the reception still be good or listenable if the power antenna lead is not connected to the head unit.

The power antenna only makes the antenna go up and down. If the antenna is down then reception will likely be horrible, if it's up then it should be OK. You will still need to connect the antenna lead (the lead the signal travels on).
