Garage to home theater

I have a 19' X 19' 6" garage that I have been given permission by the misses to turn into a HT/Listening room as long as I can still open the garage door. I have a full sized pool table that will be staying in the room but other than that I have a blank canvas.

Since this is an awful echo chamber at this point I have been researching bass traps and other acoustical treatments. My primary concern is with the carpeting. I am not sure if there is a major difference in what kind of carpet I get for the theater or if just any carpet will help defeat standing waves.

What kind of garage door do you have? Mine is an aluminum one that rattles like crazy. As for the echoes, adding any carpet will help a lot. The deeper the pile, the more absoption. After that, you can add sound absorption panels as needed. They are easy to make.

One thing about echoes, reverb, and all that: a square room makes them worse.

When you say the door must still open, do you mean you want access to the whole room from the garage door? Or, can you put up a wall and have 3-4 feet of storage space accessed through the big door, and seal off the rest?

Changing the shape of the room will help with the echo chamber effect, will help cut down on sound passing out through the big door into your neighborhood, and will most certainly improve the heating/cooling environment in your future HT.

I have an aluminum door also but will be insulating with R-13 Fiberglass insulation with foam board to cover. I will also be applying acoustical wedge or pyramid foam to the secondary reflection points. I am also going to completely cover from floor to ceiling the corners beside the garage door with 3" foam to create a total bass trap and to also assist in insulating the door.

I must be able to access the entire room from the garage door. Also I will be pushing my 4 x 8 pool table up close to the garage door to make the theater area as large as possible.

I'd also add some car audio sound deadening material to the door. Insulation and foam are great for stopping the highs but you need mass to stop the bass. If my theater were in the garage, I'd have noise complaints all of the time.

Just thinkin out the backside here, but what happens when you add a lot of weight to a garage door? You may need to put in some extra helper springs!

Can I not just tighten the spring to assist with the weight? I have the tools to do that.
