I am having a brain fart.

I need to inexpensively trace some speaker wires that are running through the walls and for some reason I can't think of how to do this. It's been a rough day so I apologize for such a simple question.

When I say trace what I mean is I have 4 sets of speaker wire coming through the walls but only two are hooked up to speakers. The speakers are in another room, far away from the amp, so just connecting them and listening for music won't work. The real pain is they are all the same brand of wire and look identical so i just need to find the left and right for the wires I am using.

I know as soon as I see the answer I am going to smack my head and say, "DOH!", but right now I could use the help.

hmm. disconnect the speaker wire from the speakers.
on one pair of speaker wires. twist the remote ends together.
use a conductivity tester on the other end. label both ends. untwist. repeat.

Do you have an Ohm meter? If so test 2 wires behind the receiver. The resistance should be 0 ohms if the wires are hooked up to the speakers.

Identify all 4 sets of speaker wires this way. Label them A, B, C, D.

LEFT FROM RIGHT:

Twist both ends of "B" together in the other room. Twist 1 of the wires from A as well.

Go behind the receiver and measure resistance from any wire for B and the wires from A. The wire with zero resistance matches the twisted wire from A in the other room. Label this "+". Label the other "-". Then do the same in the other room.
