Help! my theater space is too open for a sub?!

I am new to all this.... I recently installed a 50" plasma recessed over the fireplace with a media center pc and it all works great. Now I want to upgrade the Radio Shack speakers with a 5.1 or 6.1 system to go with an Onkyo surround receiver . I've been all over the net trying to determine what sub to use. I was about settled on a Velodyne 12' when I called their customer service with a question about a particular model.

I was told that because by home ( basically a barn ) is so open ( 30,000 cubic feet or so) that unless I buy a few 18" subs, I may as well forget it because I will never get any subwoofer frequencies. On my limited budget
(and being married) that is not an option.

I would appreciate any suggestions to get base.

Thanks

Scott

Yes, the sub "sees" the entire space, not just the room so if you have open spaces it won't properly pressurize the area. You might try a near field placement, meaning putting the sub close to your seat. This is what I did and got good results. Ordinarily sub placement is critical and near you might not the best for flat response but at least you will feel it.
You might also try a tactile transducer or bass shaker attacted to your chair, sofa, something like a Butt-Kicker: http://www.thebuttkicker.com/

I know enough to know I don't know enough!
