help with my first sonosub

Hi, I have decided I wan't to build a sonosub for my HT but am looking for some advice. I think I have decided on a single sonosub with a single sub mounted in the bottom and a port on the top. Most important i need help choosing my driver. I want to go with either a 15" or 18" driver. The size of the tube isn't really an issue, I am OK with having to go as big as I need to, maybe 24" or 36" diameter, or whatever. I have 2 older QSC model 1400 amps which say they are 4 ohms min per side (300W) or 8 ohms min when bridged. I could use one or both to power it. I was thinking a dual 4 ohm voice coil sub would do and I could run it off of one amp. Would that amp be good enough for a large 15" or 18" sub? Do they make dual 8 ohm voice coil subs? Then I could bridge both amps for each VC, or would that be too much power or not a good idea??

As for price I dont think I wanna spend too much on the sub, maybe $200 or $250, can I get an OK sub for that price or do I need to rethink my budget?

I want to design this sonotube for both music and movies. Right now my HT room is quite large, at about 24' by 22' X 8' ceiling, but will probably be building a wall eventually reducing it down to 24' X 14' X 8'.

Once I decide on the driver, is it as simple as punching its values into a program like WinISD and it will tell me the volume to make the tube and the port length and diameter and such?

Also are there any good links to a good explanation of what the T/S parameters mean and what are good numbers and not so good numbers.

Thank you very much.

Re: help with my first sonosub

So the QSC is 300x2 in 4 ohms or 600x1 into 8 ohms. Not a problem. You will only need one amp per sonosub. There are a few dual 8 ohm subs that I know of but they won't handle 1200w (your 2 amps bridged).

Is your budget just for the driver or the entire sonosub? You will spend between $30 and $100 on the sonotube. You will also need a port(s), MDF, dowel rod and terminal plate. What tools do you have? A router and a circle cutting jig is a must for a professional looking sub.

I try to design accurate subs. They should work great for both music and movies.

Programs like WinISD and Unibox will give you a recommended design but most of us tweak it. I like ESB (extended bass shelf) designs. Those are larger enclosures with lower tuning points.

T/S explained There are dozens of other sites like Wikipedia and How Stuff Works that will also explain each parameter. What are good parameters? Depends on your goals. Also you can't look at just one parameter and judge a speaker. When you change one parameter, they all change. It's a very complex relationship. And you should also read about different alignments at DIY Subwoofers dot org.

How big is your room? Do you want reference levels at 20 hz? Do you watch action movies? What type of music will you be playing through it? Answer these and the questions above and we can start to narrow the choices down.

Re: help with my first sonosub

Right now my HT room is quite large, at about 24' by 22' X 8' ceiling, but will probably be building a wall eventually reducing it down to 24' X 14' X 8'. My 200 to 250 budget was for the driver only. I did some searching and found a TC sounds 15" TC-1000 D4 for $200 plus shipping. How do people feel about that driver? Or would a lower quality 18" be better? keep in mind I only have 600W. I have all the tools and I am pretty handy.

I do want the sub to go right down to 20 Hz. Yes I do watch action movies. And as for music, just about all types, rock to techno.

An ESB design sounds good, a larger enclosure is fine and a lower tuning point is good.

Also right now I'm only want to build a single sonosub. Not a pair of them yet.

Get that driver. I've run a 12" Stryke AVII (a TC-1000 with a 2 piece aluminum cone) with about 700w. It's a great sub.

I'd go with at least 300L tuned to 15hz. The response in Unibox looks great.
