starting to design a home

I'm start to look at pre-designed homes to get a good starting point for the home i'm going to build. I'm definitely going to want to include a dedicated theater room. What size/shape room is best, and should it be located in a basement, main floor, or upstairs loft type setting? I've always thought that a basement would be best with a solid foundation below it to cut down on shaking the whole house.

I would definitely go for the basement location if you are planning front projection because you can better control lighting and sound isolation. Rectangular rooms are better than square and odd dimensions like 17x25 are better than 16x24 due to audio issues like standing waves. These are basic guidelines but a good start.

mylan makes several good points and I agree. Read some of my other comments here for proper seating distance from the display.
