How to connect AV setup
I am planning my wiring layout so I can order the cables I need for my setup, I have the following:
Motorola Digital Cable box w/DVI, optical digital and component rca's
Samsung LNS4051D 40" LCD HD Flat Screen
Onkyo HT-S790
Onkyo DV DV-SP404 HDMI DVD player
I was thinking to run the cable box directly to the TV by using a DVI to HDMI adapter and then running HDMI cable. Then running component rca's and an optical digital cable from the cable box to the receiver.
My DVD player has HDMI connection so I was thinking of running that to the TV's other HDMI slot, and then component rca's and optical digital to the receiver.
Then I was gonna run component rca's and optical digital from the TV to the receiver to seal the deal.
Does this sound right? Am I making more difficult than it needs to be? If so, how should I wire it up to get the best sound and picture quality while using the least amount of wiring?
Thanks for your help!

not sure why you are sending video via component to the receiver when you are sending the video to the tv via HDMI. a simpler way to do it IMO is send all the video to the TV, via HDMI(and HDMI to DVI with the adapter) and then send all the audio to the receiver via optical. remember though the video switching will be done by the tv and the audio switching done by the receiver

Well that sounds like an easy way to do it.
Except for one problem, my DVD player only has HDMI, Component video, Composite video, and analog audio jacks. No optical or digital jacks. Will this be an issue? I was under the impression that I wouldn't need the optical or digital jacks since it has HDMI. So would I still be able to enjoy dolby digital by running HDMI to my TV from the DVD, and then optical digital from the TV to the receiver?

Am I making this too difficult?
Trying to get things figured out today so I can order the cables I need to get my HT setup when it arrives on Friday.
If I connect my cable box and dvd player to my tv via hdmi, and then from the tv to the receiver via component video and optical digital, is it necessary to run any video or audio signals from the cable box or dvd player to the receiver? I am thinking not since they are connected to the tv via hdmi and then the tv is connected to the receiver.
Am I right?
I am reading stuff that says I need to run video and audio through the receiver in addition to the connections above. Why is that necessary? It seems to me that if I connect the two devices listed above to the TV, and then connect the TV to the receiver, that I will be able to enjoy the digital surround sound I am trying to get. Wouldn't the extra connections to the receiver be overkill and unneeded?

Rich, this is the third thread you have begun discussing the same topic. You really should be continuing it in the same thread.

Re: Will this work? *Diagram inside*
Hi Rich - you won't need to connect your DVD Player via Component to your AVR, and won't need to connect the AVR to your HDTV via Digital Coax. Here's how I would cable your home entertainment system:
Digital Cable Box >> HDMI >> HDTV
Digital Cable Box >> Digital Coax or Optical Audio >> AVR
DVD Player >> HDMI >> HDTV
Digital Cable Box >> Digital Coax or Optical Audio >> AVR
AVR >> Component >> HDTV
I would recommend purchasing a Universal Remote such as a Logitech Harmony 880 to simplify the setup. Enjoy!

This is the answer I've been waiting for!!! I've read so much conflicting information that I had no clue what cables I needed to order.
I can now order what I need and it won't be such a rats nest behind there now. Thanks for the help!

Oops - the 4th line should read "DVD Player" not "Digital Cable Box". The cabling I listed is all correct, enjoy!
