Center Channel Placement. OPINIONS WANTED!

In my never-ending quest to improve my HT, I am considering moving my center channel above my TV, mounted on the wall. It is currently residing in the cabinet below the TV and I am tired of opening and closing it. Not to mention it looks stupid when open.

Please see the picture below for a visual of where I am considering the center mount.

The center would hang about 12" above the top of the screen and mount about 12" farther back than the screen putting the front of the center channel about 6" back from the front of the screen. I would, of course also have it angled downward pointed at the "sweet spot".

Do you think this will be a problem? Will the center sound to far from the screen? Will it mess up my sound stage?

Thanks!

Re: Center Channel Placement. OPINIONS WANTED!

I am also anxiously awaiting everyone's responses. Since the screen is frequently centered at eye/ear level, I am also wondering where the best location for the center channel is (above/below?). Anyone have a response for Adam? I've always heard that sound coming from slightly above your ears is less locatable, but if that's true, then why are TV speakers always built in at the bottom of the set?

(Adam, Sorry I don't have any input for you.)

TOO LATE!

I got impatient and went out to Lowes at lunch to buy some hinges. Installed hanging down like that, it is now only about 6" above the screen.

Here's the results. Click for fullsize.
Notice the DVD shelves I built as well since that last picture.

I'll report back after a recalibration and audio test.

Report time:

After a quick calibration, I ran the first 10 minutes of LotR:FotR and a few minutes of The Corpse Bride BluRay.

Only dialog seemed to be "above" the TV, but it might be that I was listening for it. After a few minutes, that kind of stopped and the dailog seemed to blend more and I was paying attention to the film more.

Conclusion: I can live with it.

Did you like the sound better with the speaker below the set? Do you think it would sound better if it was immediately above the TV?

You might want to ask a mod to move this to the speaker forum to get more (any) responses.

I think I need to listen to it for longer to really pass judgment.

I would venture to guess if the center was above the TV for a while and I moved it below that's I'd notice the same difference.

I will let it sink in for a few movies and games.
