Doors and seating distance

Hey guys, two questions for you.

Killed some time in home depot last night looking at doors. All the interior doors were 1 3/8" I have read a solid thick door is better. What size are you all using. The 1 5/8" exterior doors? Also are fiberglass doors(the pre-hung doors) ok?

Finally I know there are rules of thumb for viewing distance but I want to know what really works or what has been done. With a 106" diagonal wide screen where would you guys place your main seat? I have a 30" tv right now that I view at about 8'. Sitting at 14.5' with a 106" screen seems close. Thanks for the help

Re: Doors and seating distance

With a 106" diagonal screen and a HD projector, I would sit between 11' and 12' back. With a 480p projector, I would sit about 15' back. I don't know what's best, but I used a solid 6 panel pine door(to match the rest of the doors in the house).

Re: Doors and seating distance

The general rule of thumb with seating distance is 1.5X your screen dimension. This is subject to personal preference and can also be effected by the resolution of your projector. Higher resolution projectors allow for closer viewing without the "screen door" effect.

Solid core doors should work better than hollow core, but if you really want to get the best sound possible you should consider putting some sound treatment on the door regardless of its construction.

Good Luck,
Bud

Re: Doors and seating distance

Thanks for the help. I plan on buying the projector in about a year so I am hoping for 1080i. I am having a hard time with the idea of being 12 feet from a 106" screen. I guess I have adjusted to the smaller screen. I will have to take another trip to the local audio video showroom.

Re: Doors and seating distance

I sit about 11' from my 92" screen, and have no trouble watching 480p dvd's. I would think 14' or so with a 106" screen should be ok.

Re: Doors and seating distance

I recently installed a Sanyo Z5, a 1080i pj and the seats were delivered at about 7 feet from the 106" screen. I was surprised no SDE was evident that close. So I guess it dpends on how ur pj performs.

Talk about early planning. A year in advance?

Website with good information

Here is a website that gives some really good information on seating arrangements, screen size and viewing angles. There are a lot of variables to consider and changing one variable effects the others.
