Is 14' x 14' too small for a projector?

I was planning to do a projector but I looked at some specs and it looks like I would only get ~63" screen size, not the 90"+ I was hoping for.

At that size a DLP or LCD is about the same price and I wouldn't have to rewire anything.

Thoughts?

Wherever you looked was wrong. The screen size depends on your seating distance from screen, and resolution of projector. I'll asume you want a 720p projector and will sit 12' back. You can go with a screen size up to 8' wide(110" diagonal). The rule of thumb with a 720p projector is to sit back 1.5X screen width from screen. There are 2 quality 720p DLP projectors priced at less than $1,000; Mitsubishi HD1000 and Optoma HD70.

Re: Is 14' x 14' too small for a projector?

I was using this tool
http://www.projectorcentral.com/proj...ulator-pro.cfm

and a Panasonic Home PT-AE900U
1280x720p projector I was using as an example

It's saying at 14' I could have a 70" corner-corner screen.

With the Mitsi you recommend it is showing 97". Optoma is showing 101".That probably makes it worth it vs a $3k+ 70"+ DLP.

Thanks for the correction, didn't know the projectors varied that much!

Doesn't that only give him 2 feet for a couch? I am curious as well.

Chris, with their calculator you enter your throw distance, then it shows you the min. and max. screen size the projector will give you using the zoom lens. The 70" you referred to is obviously the smallest image possible. The projectors range so much because of the different zoom lenses.
PAPutzbzck, if he puts the couch close to back wall, his seating distance would be 12'-13' from screen. About 13' if he put it against back wall.

Re: Is 14' x 14' too small for a projector?

I have the Sanyo Z5 which has a very similar lens to the Panasonic and it works just fine in a room that is 14 feet long. Do not forget that all the measurements are done from the lens and that the projector cannot be mounted right up against the wall. If you are ceiling or shelf mounting it you will be well over a foot from the back wall to the lens. I left about 6" clearance behind mine.
