DVI/HDMI cable for Apple computer to my Sony t.v

I just got a 3 year old apple computer to use it to burn CDs and surf the web and even watch DVDs. I noticed a DVI output on the back and I connected it to the t.v. and saw the apple logo but nothing else after. I bought the cable for my Zenith DVB 318 and since it doesn't show anything due to HDCP, I kept the cable anyway. Do I need to a different DVI cable. I know that it comes in different letters like DVI-I, DVI-D something like that. can anyone help me to connect this computer to my Sony KP51WS520.

It might be treating the output as a second video port... As your getting a signal, I would guess that the cable is fine. I would go to an apple forum or apple.com and see if you can find an answer there.

Thanks for the responses, Jeremy, the link you gave refers to multiple monitors, I'm looking to have the t.v. as the computer monitor only. Chris, I'll check out apple.com and see if they have information. Thanks again for responding.

Please explain. Was it grey with a black apple? Did it remain on the screen, or was it replaced with something else?

Did you try holding down the option key?

Does this machine work with a ordinary monitor?

Jerome, the TV is a second monitor from the computers point of view, so the link Jeremy gave you should be relevant.

Gotcha, I wouldn't have guessed the computer view the t.v. as a second monitor. Will look into it.
