Capacitor damage

The plastic exterior coating of a capacitor melted when I was removing it from a board, exposing the metal interior casing. Will this compromise its performance or safety?

The plastic is usually a PVC material that melts at very low temps. So you are probably OK.

Did you accidentally hit it with your soldering iron? If so, no issue.

If you got the leads so hot the case plastic melted, then you may want to replace it, just for good measure.

Thanks for the resopnse. Actually, it was hot-glued to a board and I used a hot knife to melt the glue and pull it off.
90 views and no one telling me I'm going to die. I'll take that as a positive sign.

Hook it to an ohm meter to confirm that it has infinite DC resistance. If so, it is safe to use.
