Designing and building my own sconces

So, I got to thinking, I like several of the Sconces I have seen available but I can't justify spending $100 to $150 a light, so I decided I would design my own.

Imagine that a bit more refined and done in brushed aluminum, similar to this quick design:

I have some hookups in both the aluminum and welding department. The front diamond would be a deep red glass and will be a seperate controllable light from the main fixture. This will allow me to have the nice red diamon glow without having to have the sconce light on.

Here is a 3d rendering of what I was thinking (minus the red diamond)

And the glass I would be using for the red diamond:

What do you guys think?

I faxed over the 3d rendering to a metal shop in the area and am waiting to hear if the whole thing could be bent out of a single piece of aluminum (rather than welding it) and they will also give me a price quote. That will be, by far, the most expensive part.
