Consistency among connection types?

Is it necessary for connections to be consistent in order for them to work? Would the connections from a DVD player to a reciever to a television all need to be component in order for the component connection to work?

Not that it makes sense to do this, but is it possible to run DVD to reciever S-video, then receiver to TV component?

Depends on the receiver. Some newer upscale receivers will upconvert s-video to component. Check the features for the receiver(s) you are considering.

Yes, it makes a lot of sense, but no - it does not work that way.

If you feed SVideo to a receiver, you can only see these sources if you run a SVideo cable from the receiver to the TV.

The same with component sources.

As Jeff said - some receivers will up-convert SVideo to Component and people tend to love this feature.
