DiyAudio is a great resource for this, but I have been a member at lumenlab.com since it was started. I love the forum and the info that is gained there. I went the overhead projector route the first time and the results were ok, but I wanted something better. So I joined lumenlab and made my first projector box. I am in the process of building a larger box that will be contained behind a wall in my theater.
A projector can be built for around $500-$600 depending on panel preference. They may not fit into many HT designs, but I am designing my entire room around this type of projector.
Check out the above sites to get an idea of the design and size of these projectors. You get superb results, even when compared to $8000 + projectors. Although the footprint is a bit larger
