Small Fan for Receiver?

Anyone use a small fan, such as a cpu fan on your computer, to blow across the vents on the top of your receiver? I just bought an AVR630 and after a while it seems pretty warm on top. Thought adding a small silent fan might help a bit and possible extend the life of the receiver.

Thanks Wayne. I just checked the manual and it states "Make certain there is proper ventilation above and below the unit. And if placed in a cabinet a fan may be needed." The reciever is an AVR630 and sits on a glass shelf with another glass shelf above it with the dvd player on it. I definetly do not have 4-6" above it. I will see if I can move the dvd player shelf up one notch to see if that helps.

Jason, I have the HK avr630 too, and I had the same problem. My big problem is that I only have 1 1/4" above my 630. So what I did was place 2 3" fans on each side of my 630 blowing the air to the front. My 630 fan run most of the time while the other 2 fans are hooked up to the switched outlet and run 100% of the time. I have had this set up for about 8 months now and I have never had any problems. I find the air circulates really well. I hung the 2 fans from elastics from my tv stand and they are 100% quite, I cannot hear them when my system is on "mute".

Scott, thanks for helping out here. I have about 2 1/2" above mine. Can you here the fan inside the 630 running? I do not believe I hear mine running. Makes me wonder if it is even working? What type of fans did you buy to blow across yours? I to would like some silent fans.

hey, I cannot hear the 630 fan, but I know is works cause I can feel the heat being blowen out. The fans I use are Stealth Vantec? All I did was go to the largest computer store in town, and check out their case fans. Almost all the fans that I checked had the db rating on them. I talked to a guy there and told him that I want the quitest fans out there, and that is what he told me.
The connection I did was this-
old power cable,wired to a multi adaptor, then just hooked the 2 + fans cables to the multi +, and the 2 - fans cables to the multi -. The fans are 12V but Damn to loud at 12V, so I have mine set at 4.5V. Like I said, no problems at all.

The main reason why I did this was because I wanted my 630, Denon dvd-5900 and Monster Power hts-5100 under my TV stand.
My dvd player recommends 2-4" of clearance as well. So I took the feet off my powercenter, switched the feet on my dvd and 630 to thinner ones and replaced the 1/2" shelf with a piece of 5mm tinted glass. So I have 3/8" under dvd, 1/2" on top dvd, shelf, 3/8" under 630 and 1 1/4" above 630. I took the back off my stand for better air circulation and the fans just keep all the air moving. Also with the fans blowing forward, the air bounces off the glass doors and circulates past the dvd player to the rear.

It never really hot in there and since I am damn picky on my gear, I have no worries about anything. There you go, good luck,
