DIY speaker stands & sonotubes....

I'm thinking of building speaker stands based on the idea of a sonotube. Wood on top and bottom w/a bit of sand on the bottom to keep the stands from being top heavy. I can paint the wood (particle board or whatever), but what would be the best way to finish the cardboard? I see that most sonotubes are covered w/a 'sleeve' of some sort. Would that be the best way to go for me? Thanks in advance.

I can recommend PVC pipe for the speaker stand shafts. Mine are of a triangular formation of two 4" wide PVC pipes with one 6" wide PVC pipe.

Not pretty (yet), but functional and no danger of tipping over.

There's a high WAF that I have to overcome while making them functional also. Mine also need to be taller so the heigth will create more 'tube' that is exposed.
