Hello All,

We are currently in the framing process of our home theater room. Running the speaker wire is coming up soon. I know this may be a stupid question. What guage/quality wires would I need to buy? I am planning on building a 7.1 system with 2 SVS (16-46 PC+) subwoofers and 4 to 6 bass shakers (either buttkicker 2 or aura). Does anyone have any suggestions or preferrances on type and brand of wire to use for each type of speaker/subwoofer? Thanks in advance for any help.

Robert

Typically the longer the run the larger the gauge wire you want but I would say anything between 12-16 awg should be fine. I knew a guy that used to have 8awg car audio power wire for speaker wire on some huge klipsch towers. overkill if you ask me.

12 guage will work fine for you. Try Lowes for some, I got mine for 34 cents a foot. Thats the cheapest I've found 12 guage anywhere.

If you're talking in-wall, don't neglect your local building codes.

Make sure the wire is CL2 or CL3 rated. There is alot of debate over things like copper purity, number of strands, etc. But it isn't clear as to whether or not the sonic difference among purity and strand difference within a guage is discernable. What does make a difference is diameter (guage). Check out this website for a discussion of speaker wire

(roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm#anhonest)

14ga is good enough for most applications unless your run is nearing 100'. Be sure to run quad shield coax for your SVS subs since they are PCs.

It's clear to me. I [rant]can't[/rant] tell the difference.

Ignorance is bliss.
