Sub for music listening

I'm looking for the ultimate diy sub for music listening that will mesh well with a pair of floorstanding monitors I've built. Monitors go down to about 60hz. Anyone have any suggestions?

Ultimate? If you've got a crawl space or attic in the right spot go with an IB setup. If you're asking about a floor standing sub there's going to be varied opinions. I would guess it would be something along the lines of a Tumult or equivalant in a sealed enclosure with at least 750W behind it.

Exactly. The common denominator here is they're both dual voice coil drivers that are capable of moving a lot of air and subs for music are generally made with sealed enclosures for a lower Q. With lots of power it makes for very clean, tight bass.

How about A Tumult in a 6 cubic foot sealed enclosure (Q-0.5) with about 1KW behind it, or better yet IB it. I think you would have the best sounding sub in the world period with that setup. And if you want to spend a little less, a Tempest can sound really good. I have a pair of Tempests in low Q (0.577) sealed sonotubes and I have yet to hear a sub that can even come close to sounding as good as these, and beleive it or not they are bad ass on movies!

How about 6 AV-15's in the attic IB emptying into a celing
register port type deal.. Ohh yeah better add a couple of

As well as using screws to secure the ceiling sheetrock to the ceiling joists, as 6 AV-15s with enough power will probably start popping the nails most contractors use right out, through the tape and mud and all!

If you're not after the very high SPL that these guys think you are ( ), the Adire DPL12 is my favorite sealed box (what most consider when they think "music sub") woofer. Stick it in a nice ~75L box with only about 150-200w (I run mine with a PE 150w plate amp) behind it and you've got quality as good as it gets short of a big dipole setup. Check out this thread for Jon's typically detailed anaysis along these lines.

As you see from the link to the driver, Kyle has them on sale for $125 shipping included. Given the modest power requirements, it's quite an economical setup also. If you think you want more volume, multiples are an option, as also discussed in the thread above.

Also don't forget the Dayton Titanic 1200 (Mk1). Along the same lines as the DPL12 Jack mentioned, it won't crack your foundation but its supposed to be fantastic for music in a sealed enclosure around 2 cu ft.
