I’d like a professional look for the termination of my side and rear surround speaker wires.

What do you think of the following recessed pressfit terminals inserted directly into the drywall?

I think it would look rather nice.

Are their any drawbacks to doing this? Has anyone else done this?

Hi Richard,

In my opinion, the nicest and most professional way to do it would be using single gang decora plates with five way binding posts... that's the way I did it when I was doing My System after looking at various home theaters done by professional a/v contractors. You need to put electrical gang boxes into the wall (they have special ones for excisting drywall if you already put it up), and then install the five way decora thing just as you would any electrical outlet or whatever.

Here is a link to how mine look like: http://robsht.freeservers.com/images/ar11_1.jpg

You can buy all your supplies at Smarthome.com.

Hope this helps.

I have the same style wall plates as Rob_k. I purchased mine from Radio Shack. The wall plates look sharp and you can use banana plugs or just plain stripped wire for termination.

I agree with Rob and Tony--- the item you linked to is specifically for building speaker enclosures. A gang box and wall plate is a better way to go, if you don't want to wire directly to your speakers (some people prefer direct wiring)...

Another popular style of wallplate is the "QuickPort" modular type. You can get them at Home Depot & Lowes.... Leviton makes them, in addition to other manufacturers. Example:

These can allow for mixing of various connections on the same plate, like a banana plug with a phone and cable.... etc.

In my opinion, I'd opt for the Quickport in case you want some flexibility. If I would do it all again, I'd use those plastic tubes in the wall they have now so you can move wires in and out easily, and I'd use one of those all in one wires, the kind that have a coax, cat5e, fiber optic, phone, speaker, etc. in one strand. Man... if only I could do it again .
