What are the Disadvantages of extending Component video cables

Hello every one!!

Ive got 2 machines that will be using the component video inputs for my TV,(DVD for us and the Gamecube for the kids)but there are only 1 component video inputs on my TV. I've decided to get 3 RCA extension cables to plug into the TV component inputs that can connect to either the DVD or Gamecube by simply switching connectors. This is much more convenient and safer for the kids than switching from the back of the TV.

Some questions then:

Will his extra length degrade the DVD quality of the picture? I know this will depend on the cables used and the length, so a rough idea only. The cable length is hopefully going to be under 3 metres (about 9 feet) after adding the legth of my cables and the extensions. The quality of the cable is going to be generic quality brands like Monster or Harmony or Radio Shack. If there 9 feet is too long what legth do you recommend?

I need 3 RCA extension cables, Can I break the taboo and use audio RCA extension cables? In other words are video RCA cables the same as audio RCA. Ive been told they are not but aren't these connectors built the same?

I can also get those devices that allow 2 inputs to go into the TV, but the ones for component video are rare locally (Australia). anyway if I do find one I'd still like to know any ideas relating to the first question on possible degradation in quality.

Hi Ray.

Video cables are made with 75 ohm coax. Audio cables can be made with 50/75/110/300 ohm coax. So no, you should not use audio cables.

Coax is tested with 100' runs so the length issue is minor.

Although it violates the 'rule', several members have bought the inexpensive Left/Right/Video switchers from Radio Shack and use these for a component video switch.

The degradation issue will come from 2 things:

- The barrel/RCA connectors are likely not 75 ohms which can cause some reflections.

- If you manually switch over and over, the friction-fit RCA plugs will loosen.

So the inexpensive switch would be a better choice.

Thanks for the answers, i think i shall follow your advice and go for those switch devices, hopefull my local specialist home entertainemt store has one - it'll probably be a good investment for diital tv and all.
