Re: Godfather Blu-ray Confirmed
What got me about this set were two small, but significant things, in my opinion.
First, it was the Paramount logo. They've replaced the old logo with the new Paramount logo, except they've color timed it to look exactly like the films as if they've always been that way.
Second, the subtitle fonts. Again, something small but something beautiful. They match the fonts to the burned in fonts that we've always seen with these films. I mean, think about that for a second. It's always the little details that make or break art, for me...especially in film. This is one of those little details that just put me over the top. Again, it was just glorious.

Re: Godfather Blu-ray Confirmed
I was hoping to see the original Paramount logo, but it isn't a deal breaker by any means.

I have little doubt that on a 50 inch or less HD monitor, sitting at a distance of 15 feet or more, the new DVDs and the Blu-ray will possibly look comparable, if that is what you are trying to get at.
But let me ask you this: have you ever watched a DVD projected on a 15 foot screen? It looks soft and blurry, no matter how well mastered the DVD is. Blu-ray does not have this problem. With bluray it looks like you are watching a 35mm film being projected, which is the ultimate goal.

Blu-ray seems to be clearly superior.
HUGE thank you to Robert A. Harris & Paramount. I adore these films (well, at least part 1-2.. ).

Re: Godfather Blu-ray Confirmed
I gave the 2001 dvds to my dad figuring he'd get me the Blu-Rays for xmas. Now I might have to go to Best Buy today and pick it up.
Guess he'll have to go back to my wish list.

Re: Godfather Blu-ray Confirmed
Last night I ran what I knew would be the acid test for me. On The Godfather Part 2, the opening scene with just Michael's face and some unknown kissing his hand, on the 2001 DVDs it looked as though there was a swarm of gnats buzzing around Michael's head and face. That always bothered me. I was told by a resident expert in these forums that was simply film grain that was supposed to be there and the film looked precisely as it should.
Well, I know the difference between film grain and a swarm of gnats buzzing around someone's head, so that scene always continued to bug me (no pun intended).
Last night I popped in the Blu-ray of the restored The Godfather Part 2. Michael's head was there, the grain was there, but the swarm of gnats was gone.

Ditto, mine's scheduled to arrive Thursday.
However I just bought the new Pioneer VSX-03TXH receiver so that baby will keep me occupied until the set arrives. I'll be rediscovering my other Blu-Rays with their lossless sound for the next couple of nights! (okay, it's not bitstreamed as I use a PS3 but even the DTS-MA and TrueHD converted to LPCM 5.1 by the PS3 sounds better than the standard audio tracks)
Can't wait until Thursday!

Re: Godfather Blu-ray Confirmed
The release of this set actually was the tipping point for me to enter the world of BluRay. I ordered the set before I had a player, and just ordered a Sony BDP-S350 player. I am really looking forward to watching the restored films. Parts I and II are two of my favorite films.

There's a nice article on the restoration in today's USA Today.

Re: Godfather Blu-ray Confirmed
I watched The Godfather this afternoon and I must say that it looks great. RAH and all involved have delivered a really excellent release.
Can't wait to check all the other discs.
