I'm amazed how many people don't even bother to do the slightest bit of research into a topic before they come in here and start with their "I'm thinking that..." and then make up wild suppositions about what format this restoration was intended for out of thin air.

Look at the Star Wars dvds. Nearly all grain was taken out without sacrificing the film like look of the trilogy.

George Lucas wanted to give the trilogy a cleaner and sharper look.
However, that look goes against what was intended for The Godfather. It's like modifying Van Gogh's broad brush strokes in his "Starry Night" to become less obvious. It's just part of the film.

Re: Godfather Blu-ray Confirmed
My copy of the Godfather Trilogy arrived on blu-ray a bit early, and on Friday evening I watched The Godfather, my favorite film of all time, in a beautiful, revelatory presentation. Moments like this are exactly why I became a home theater enthusiast, and this weekend I experienced a magical evening of cinema in the privacy of my own home.
I've never seen the Godfather in the theater. At 36, about the same age as the film itself, I'm too young for that. I have seen the films countless times on video cassette, laser disc, DVD and even TV—one of the few films I cannot turn off, even when I stumble upon an edited, pan and scan, commercial edited broadcast.
What I saw this weekend was both exactly what I've watched and loved so many times before, and at the same time something totally new—a richer, more detailed and more nuanced film. The image was at times surprising, but never seemed off or wrong—often dramatically different than the washed out, muddied palette I'd memorized.
I can't believe anyone reading this thread has never seen the film, but just in case there are minor film spoilers ahead:
Apart from the golden patina, which is notable immediately in Bonasera's opening monologue, I was most struck by the vibrancy of reds. A few moments in particular that stuck out: Kay's coat and hat when she arrives at the compound with a letter for Michael, in Radio City's neon marquee, and in a vibrant orange falling leaf, during Michael's reunion walk with Kay that I'd simply never once noticed before.
Frankly I'm just over the moon at how beautiful and film-like the blu-ray presentation is. As one who loves film, including its grain, I'm not sure how the "erase the grain" advocates will feel, but I'm happy that Paramount didn't acquiesce in an appeal to the lowest-common denominator.
My thanks to Mr. Harris and his restoration team for their amazing work and to everyone else, from Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, Gordon Willis, Allen Daviau and Paramount Pictures, that made this project possible.
The sublime experience of watching The Godfather on blu-ray is what this hobby is all about for me.
And now I'm off to watch Part II :-)

I strongly suggest that you watch the DVD version of this new restoration.
Considering all the work that was done for this project, I'd imagine that the dvd version of this restoration is a huge improvement over the 2001 dvds.

1) How exactly would they squeeze any more resolution from a DVD?
2) If the DVD restoration is a huge improvement over the 2001 DVDs, and the Blu-rays are an improvement over that (to everybody but you and Thivanka/diamondfoxxx), why is there any reason to bother with the DVDs? What's with the anti-BD sentiment?

Re: Godfather Blu-ray Confirmed
That must be based on a misunderstanding.
For anyone having access to the Blu-ray version, there's no need to watch the SD DVD version instead (other than reasons that are totally irrelevant to this discussion).
And I say this as someone who owns (and loves) the SD DVD of the new restoration and is impatiently awaiting the BD set.

Why should he? You haven't done so. Your first post in this thread yesterday was to ask the opinion of someone who had.

And I intend to watch the dvd version so I can make a comparison. I encourage everyone else to do the same before jumping to the conclusion that the bluray version is so much better than the dvd version.

Why should anybody do that if they're happy with the Blu-ray version? I haven't seen a dvd version yet that's superior to a Blu-ray version so I don't expect that to change with this release.

It's not really a contest. There's no reason for someone with BD capabilities to pick up the SD version of the movies. While they may not be bad, why go with a product with less resolution and probably much more compression (fitting the 3 hr 20 minute Godfather Pt II on one disc has me a little nervous)? It's just silly.
I've seen a copy of the R2 release of the restored The Godfather. It looks pretty damn good. But the BD release won't be any worse.
