BluRay Movie Question?

This may be a dumb question but doesn't a movie need to be filmed with a HD Camera to be put out on a BluRay disc?

Which leads to my confusion as to how they put older movies out on BluRay since they weren't filmed with HD Camera.

Can someone give me a layman's explanation???

Thanks!

Re: BluRay Movie Question?

I'll try. No, a film does not need to be filmed in HD to be presented that way. HD discs are about a higher resolution and a better picture. When a film is presented on a movie screen, it is still at a higher resolution (or quality) than what you are seeing at home. HD discs are just getting closer to the original image than DVD, LD and VHS could.

Re: BluRay Movie Question?

Film is typically converted to a HD master by the studios. They then downconvert the film HD master to 480P for DVD. I believe the masters are created at 4k resolution but I could be mistaken.

Anyway, film has a lot more resolution than HD so take that into account.

Re: BluRay Movie Question?

35mm film theoretically has a resolution that exceeds 4k. This is the resolution of the camera negative not the release prints which in some cases may not be more than 1.5 to 2k. Transfers to video are typically done using the camera negative or an internegative, not the release prints.

HD DVD and Blu-ray both have a resolution of about 2k. The color space of High Def can't even come close to reproducing all the colors that can be represented on 35mm film.

There for even an older film shot in 35mm such as The Adventures of Robin Hood from 1938 will benefit from a presentation in High Def.
