The Omega Man
It may not be a classic but I was certainly glad that Warners decided to release this film on BD and HD DVD. The transfer to 1080 looks just great - so many new details showing themselves that I will have to watch it again. Not that I haven't seen it more than a few times. Heston never looked better! If you enjoy this film - even if on the cheesy side - do yourself a favour and buy a copy. I watched it on a 42" 1080 LCD flat panel but the pj gets fired up this weekend for the big screen. Yep, they sure don't make them like that anymore.

Re: The Omega Man
Yeah, it's a fun movie. Night of the Comet is a cool '80s takeoff on it.
Out of all Heston's Sci-fi movies though, I do wish Fox would release his original Planet of the Apes on Blu instead of just the crappy Burton remake.

Re: The Omega Man
Hey Brent,
What flavor of The Omega Man do you have? Blu-ray or HD-DVD?
I have been on DVD Empires web site and it it says Dolby Digital Plus for the HD-DVD version and Dolby Digital 1.0 for the Blu-ray. Well thats what I got when I looked at the photo of the back of the jewl case. You would think that the movie would have a remixed 5.1 track. Hell even the original Planet Of The Apes got a DTS 5.1 mix on the aniversary release.
If the HD-DVD is the only HD version with 5.1 surround then I allready know what format to buy this movie on!

Re: The Omega Man
HD-DVD is DD+ 1.0, there will be no difference between the BD and HD 1.0 tracks even though the BD is just regular DD, DD+ is not all that special IMHO

Re: The Omega Man
Thanks for the input on this title Gary, much appreciated. I guess I will have to go neutral on this title. I will just pick up what ever format is in stock or infront of me at the time.
Oh by the way Gary, just want to say nice HT/Review System.
Hey Gary where did you get your Dolby True HD, DTS-HD, Blu-ray and HD-DVD signs?

Re: The Omega Man
The film looked great on dvd and it looks sensational on the HDMs.
The elements (at least the visual elements) are in exceptional shape- but I have to think that the main reason the film looks as impressive as it does is due to the flat TV style lighting throughout, as well as the controlled shooting on the backlots.
The only problem with it i see is that this is the kind of disc that the ignorant will point at to prove their point about why such and such a film has a poor transfer or needed to be 'restored' before they made a HDM out of it.

thats the way I usually do it as well, whatever I can get for a couple bucks cheaper, usually that doesn't happen and in this case since every online store was out of the HD release I grabbed the BD of Omega
thanks a bunch Dave, appreciate the comments on the HT
I made those signs all by my lonesome

Re: The Omega Man
Does anyone know why the poor choice in mono sound on a HD release? I can get past the lack of a good 5.1 track on this title but for example I can not for a title like T3.

I don't understand. Are you saying they chose a poor quality soundtrack, where a better version exists, or are you complaining that they didn't do a 5.1 mix of this soundtrack?
If it's the latter, this is a fairly low-profile film, and they're presenting it in its original sound mix. I wouldn't expect them to do a 5.1 remix for it. I actually feel pretty lucky to have it available in HDM this early in the medium's life cycle.

Re: The Omega Man
Its not that I am not happy to see it out in HD, don't get me wrong. It just seems that a mono sound track should be on a much older movie. I just hate having sound only coming from my center channel as I feel that it sounds thin when all the channels are not being used. You would figure that it would have at least been taken from old school Dolby Pro Logic prints. That could have been translateded into Dolby True HD or Uncompressed PCM or even DD+. Not that I am a fan of DD or DD+ to be honest. I was just shocked that it was a mono soundtrack coming out on HD media. I will most likely be picking up this title sometime soon as long as my budget allows it. It is more about Dolby Digital laking in the sound department thats all, (not talking about Dolby True HD).
