CAT PEOPLE HD DVD postponed/cancelled
Heads up for anyone interested. Tried placing an order including the HD DVD of Cat People on Amazon but it's coming up as not announced.
I just did a little searching but all I found was this blurb on digitalbits. It looks like Cat People has been dropped from Universal's September slate. But hey at least we have Patch Adams.

That sucks. I had that one on pre-order. I was really looking forward to seeing Nastassja Kinski and Annette O'Toole in high def.

In a way, I'm not all that surprised. When this was announced I pulled out the dvd to try to gauge what to expect and the impression I got was that this would be a disc that got a lot of criticism and warnings to "stay away". The print used on the SE dvd doesn't have a very 'fresh' appearence and looks rather soft and grainy for the most part. I'm sure the HD DVD would have been better- but you would have had a lot of nabobs holding it up as another example of "universal not caring enough to make a new master".
In this case, they might be right- but then again I wouldn't know for sure.
I was going to order it- even though I've watched the dvd only once straight thru in all the years I've had it- so ultimately I'm kind of glad Universal saved me from a Pavlovian double dip.

I'm disappointed by this because I was really looking forward to this release.
I'm not the biggest fan of this remake, but it does have some interesting moments, and I never got the regular DVD release.
Hopefully this will resurface at some point.

Hmmm, bummer.
You know, of all the films available, or announced, for release on HD DVD, this and The Thing were the two that really tempted me to the format!
I think I've been in love with Kinski ever since I saw this movie, twenty-five years ago (yikes!)

That would be nice but I have serious doubts that Universal would consider this title worth the additional investment. More than likely it just got thrown back in their vault.
Hope I'm wrong.

that sucks! I have the 1st edition DVD and it's badly in need of an upgrade. As long as they are actually going to go ahead with a release I'll be happy. She's worth the wait.
