A few words about...™ Disturbia -- in HD & BD
Disturbia is a good, entertaining film, which borrows freely from earlier works. From Hitchcock's Rear Window, and musical phrasing reminiscent of Bernard Herrmann, and setups from Poltergeist, the film pays homage to it's predecessors.
Much has changed in the styles of filmmaking and storytelling in the past half century. Where Rear Window has a delicacy that leads to truly hair-raising moments, Disturbia neatly blends humor, romance and thrills, and is more in one's face.
There are two moments in Rear Window that are so tiny in their scope and take up so little screen time that they could easily be overlooked by the uninitiated, but once seen, never forgotten.
The first takes place just after the small dog has been found killed. Everyone in the apartment complex is visible -- with the exception of Thorwald. When the camera holds on his window, it appears that no one is home, the apartment is dark.
Until one senses the tiniest glow of a lit cigar.
Another charged moment takes place as Grace Kelly attempts to talk her way out of being arrested for breaking into Thorwald's apartment in search of evidence. With her hands behind her back, she motions toward a ring on her finger to be noticed by Scotty across the way.
But her actions are also noted by Thorwald, who in one of the cinema's more hair-raising moments looks directly across the courtyard and into Scotty's apartment, or in our case as voyeurs, directly at the camera -- at the audience.
While Disturbia misses these tiny touches, it succeeds in style and especially with the acting abilities of young Shia LaBeouf.
The disc, available in both Blu-Ray as well as HD, is a typically brilliant job by Paramount of bringing a current film to the world of high definition with style and quality. From the brilliant colors to the deepest blacks, everything is sharp, crisp and cleanly replicated.
Disturbia is a quality film, and a brilliant high definition DVD.
Recommended.
