Will Criterion ever go HD?

Does anyone think Criterion will eventually venture over to releasing HD dvds?

Re: Will Criterion ever go HD?

I can't imagine them not getting into it. Criterion has always been dedicated to the maximum-quality home video presentation (their initial aversion to anamorphic DVD notwithstanding), even if the necessary medium was a niche product (i.e., laserdisc).

In other words, I want my hi-def Baron Munchausen SE right now and they'd better hop to it.

It looks like they're sitting it out for now.

Re: Will Criterion ever go HD?

Thanks for the thread link. I suppose it is only sensible for them to wait out the format war. But their eventual entrance into HD is, I think, inevitable.

Re: Will Criterion ever go HD?

They've been doing HD transfers for their DVD releases for many years, but I wonder if by the time they enter the HD arena, that these existing HD transfers will look a little dated by then.

This might also be a matter of the reacquiring the rights to these films for a new format. After all they don't own most of the films they release.
