Re: Weekly hi def sales numbers - Nielsen/VideoScan
Interesting. I would have thought the A2 sales would've boosted HD-DVD a bit. I know I've spent a ton on HD-DVD in the last 2 weeks since I bought my A2.
Unfortunately, I don't see any equivalent titles to compare sales between BD and HD-DVD where the playing field is equal. The BD sales of The Departed (62,700 vs 37,800) and Happy Feet (25,500 vs 14,600) are almost double the HD-DVD sales, but both of those titles were combos. Many dual-format owners avoid the combos.
I would like to see numbers on a title where:
a) both versions street the same day
b) both versions have equivalent audio tracks
c) both versions have the same retail price
I think those combos are really doing damage to HD-DVD. I wish the studios would either quit doing them or make them the same price as the BD. I'm dual-format now so whatever happens is OK with me, but those numbers on page 17 of the HD insert don't look good for HD-DVD at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if greater than a third of those player sales were to people who already owned a first gen unit

When Warner stops producing HD DVD and Universal starts producing Blu-ray, then I'll put some credence in Videoscan stats.
BTW, Videoscan does not count most (any?) online sales, and even some large retailers.

Anything that puts HD DVD in a bad light must not be true, right Robert?

Re: Weekly hi def sales numbers - Nielsen/VideoScan
I've been following DVD Empire's numbers as well...they have been by and large close to Nielson's. In addition, Blockbuster recently said that 70% of their rentals have been Blu-ray. So, I think there is something to Nielson.

Anything that is true, is true. ;-)
Maybe you should re-read his post?
"BTW, Videoscan does not count most (any?) online sales, and even some large retailers".
Obviously, Videoscan is not the all & end all in tracking sales.
Don't you think other online sales & retailers should count?
If you've were here last year, you would have witnessed the BLU's falling all over themselves denying each & every sales report. I'm not saying that makes it right. Just the Amazon rankings represent the Amazon sales & the Videoscan #'s represent the Videoscan #'s; nothing more, nothing less.
Would be GREAT to see "real" #'s of every disc "sold".
Do you have those #'s?
Movies are: "The Greatest Artform".
HD should be for EVERYONE!

Except Amazon's rankings fluctuate hour by hour (and are a single on-line retailer), whereas Videoscan is actual hard data that is used by the industry at large to gauge sales at many, many different outlets.
Thank heavens summer's coming because I could use the breeze from all the HD DVD spin on these types of announcements.

That's right Peter, because we all know that BD spin JUST DOESN'T EXIST.
Please.

Re: Weekly hi def sales numbers - Nielsen/VideoScan
All the spin anyone needs to pay any attention to is who is selling what. That is more telling than any public sales reports, which are all generally either slanted or inaccurate.
Universal is STILL happy to be pressing only HD DVD, and have accelerated their release schedule to the point they are more prolific right now than any other studio on either format.
Warner continues to press both formats, while still maintaining exclusives on HD DVD.
Paramount, despite public comments that they feel Blu-ray will be the "winner", continue to press both formats equally.
Weinstein still releases on HD DVD exclusively with no announced or indicated plans for dula format support.
Sony has a Blu-ray release schedule of a few titles a month.
Disney has a Blu-ray release schedule of fewer titles than Sony.
Lionsgate has only a few Blu-ray titles on their announced schedule for the next several months.
Fox and MGM, well, you know about them, right?
Now, you can read whatever you want into published Videoscan numbers, but I think I would put more credibility in actual releases as an indication of what is selling and what isn't.
