300 sells 250k in one week

linkage

I figured this was worthy of it's own thread primarily because of the ever-present 'hi def disc sales are miniscule therefore HDM will never take off and will always be niche' arguments that get tossed around. This would seem to be an amazing accomplishment and could represent a turning point.

Tell me I'm crazy.

There are three (3) BD left of that second order.

So, that's 75 discs from one store in a week. If that happened at 2000 stores, that would be 150K units!

My BB got 100 BD copies & 75 HDDVD's the first day. We sold out of the Blu-ray copy by 6pm on the first day. The HDDVD version had about 20 copies left which sold out by friday. That Friday, we received another 60 copies of 300 on BD which sold out saturday. We have not replenished the HDDVD version it isn't even on order . This was almost exactly the same across the district when I checked availability. Not one store received more or even close to the same amount as the BD version. And all BB stores in my district sold out of the BD, had a handful of copies 1,2 days later of the HDDVD.

These BB stories are popping up all over the forums from BB employees all over the nation.

It is not looking good for Neilson 300 HDDVD sales. But then again HDDVD has been getting owned all year on Neilson.

I'll be very interested to see how the numbers break out on this one. 250k is great no matter how you slice it though.

Re: 300 sells 250k in one week

I see a lot of HD DVD supporters rallying behind this 250K figure as a means to convince studios to become neutral. Obviously, this tact helps their format, and I do not begrudge them it. However, it cuts both ways IMO.

If 300 sells a significant number of copies more on BD than HD DVD, shouldn't this clue in Warner to the fact they're leaving a lot of profit on the table by insisting that PS3-demographic titles like Batman Begins, The Matrix trilogy, and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines sit on the sidelines waiting for BD to support IME?

Moreso it proves that Universal is leaving a lot of money on the table. There are a ton of titles I'm not buying on DVD as I'm waiting for them to debut on Blu-Ray.

I'm guessing Batman Begins will hit before THE DARK KNIGHT.

this is from another forum, and I think it could be also this ratio, totaly in favor of BD

Quote:
It will be higher than that, the HD DVD selling even 50,000 is pretty unlikely, so I expect 80:20 for 300 this week.

It also proves that Sony, Fox & Disney are also leaving a lot of money on the table--there are a ton of titles I would buy from them.

We don't know what the breakdown is, but given BD's larger hardware base, I'm sure they sold more. The fact is that most B&M retailers around the country sold out of this title in BOTH formats. I know that Circuit City, Fry's & 2 Best Buy's near me sold out in BOTH formats. I believe Warner is happy with the performance of 300 on BOTH formats and pointed out that they now have 30% of the HD media market because of it's dual format approach.

More Harlow on DVD Now! - Red Dust, Bombshell, Hold Your Man, Saratoga, The Iron Man, Goldie, The Secret Six, Beast of the City, Three Wise Girls, Reckless, Personal Property, Riff-raff, Suzy & Girl from Missouri

I'll be real honest, I think we're making a mountain out of a mole hill here. This applies to Universal going neutral as well. Just because one day-and-date title takes off doesn't mean every HDM title will. I still contend that this market is too nascent to ignore alliances, DRM, and a host of other issues that made a studio decide to choose a side in the first place.

Re: 300 sells 250k in one week

It is a great number and surely shows that HDM will sell if the title is good enough, especially being day and date. I think this first week will be a bit deceiving as we don't know how many of each format WB pressed. So I expect the ratio to be closer but as the weeks pass, the overall total will grow wider and wider in BD's favor. It doesn't take much to reach saturation on the HD DVD side, while there are millions of BD players that can pick up the disc, some might even make it their very first BD disc.

With all of the money being left "on the table" by all of the studios because of this war I'm surprised "the table" hasn't collapsed

300 Rocks BTW!!
