As long as the HD DVD is better than the SD DVD, Uni's OK.
However, it should be noted by all that HD DVD BIGGEST studio supporter is not investing in new transfers. Something to take to heart.

Movies are: "The Greatest Artform".
HD should be for EVERYONE!

Well then I need to send you to Mole-Richardson to get about 5000 c47s.

I worked on a film once on which the DP was Vilmos Zsigmond. Well his first AC send a production assistant to Mole-Richardson to get something I think he called it a Doublewhack with a 90 degree angle. (if you've ever heard the names of motion picture equipment this doesn't sound all that strange)

Well Mole-Richardson told him they didn't have one and sent him to Alan Gordon Enterprises, Alan Gordon sent him to another shop. After about 5 trips Panavision took pity on the kid and told him the thing didn't exist and sent him back to the production office.

BTW c47s are actually a real item. They are clothes pins, but in the movie industry you call them c47s.

And charge $17 for each of them. How else can Sony blow $500 mil on a film?

Cheers,

Jason

Exactly. Why do you think most really big films are made in England rather than Hollywood these days.

Have to disagree with you there. I want more than minimal effort (doesn't take much to improve upon DVD) and that has been the case with some of their titles. However, all studios have a few like this.

Re: Universal HD DVD: Declining PQ?

I doubt Universal feels it's cost effective to remaster every catalog title they have coming out on HD DVD. I would love it...but let's face it, they are just not going to remaster these catalog titles until later on as the HD battle subsides. Paramount is releasing far fewer titles but they have done some outstanding remasters like Trading Places & Coming to America....and they look rather terrific.

I wish some of these Universal discs did look as good as King Kong, but even projected at about 84 inches on a 720 DLP projector, Liar Liar, and Bruce Almighty look really solid. These are far from the disasters people are saying they are....Dragonheart, The Frighteners, and Midnight Run also look rather good, maybe even near great.

Granted, Universal is trying to get the # of discs. Some of these releases really should have been halted if they look as bad as Meaning of Life is reportedly looking.

Re: Universal HD DVD: Declining PQ?

Tim,

I haven't seen the Meaning of Life HD disc yet. But having watched the SD only last week - wow - what a terrible transfer. This film has never looked good on home video. But from what I gather, it looks better than it ever has (which admittingly isn't saying much). My guess is it just isn't worth a complete master for a film that has only a cult following. I think when it comes to Meaning we're just going to have to enjoy the movie and not worry so much about the PQ.

Coming to America is so clear in HD the horrendous matte painting that represents the higher levels of the palace is so glaring it took me out of it. I don't remember the painting being so poor. Great watching the film again! I love it.

Cheers,

Jason
