Re: Weekly hi def sales numbers - Nielsen/VideoScan
the format war ends when the consumer doesn't have to make a choice based on format, and can instead make it based on other criteria- like features and price.
I don't understand why people would be afraid of combo players hurting sales.
unless they think in a format neutral playing field, their format would be at a severe disadvantage ( possibly due to production costs).

Re: Weekly hi def sales numbers - Nielsen/VideoScan
Bring out the combo players, it's the best thing for the only people who have interest in these formats - hobbyists.
Having one format die won't make much of a difference in the adoption of the other format as very few people are actually sitting out due to the format war. The average consumer doesn't know or give a crap about these formats.

I agree wholeheartedly and hope we get to see that sooner rather than later for the greater sofltware selection and greater selection of players that will follow. It won't be DVD level of sales, but it will beat the pathetic performance of High Def disc sales we see now by a mulitple.

Re: Weekly hi def sales numbers - Nielsen/VideoScan
If there was a combo player (fully featured) say around $750 or even $800....I would be tempted. Very temped.

Exactly.
So making a combi-player will make profit, because it will end the "war" aspect of two formats existing next to each other.
If combi-players are readily available, we have no format-war any more!

Let's assume for a moment (only to stress a point for those who understand it this way) it will be Blu-ray that dies. Do you really think Sony, Disney and Fox will gladly turn to HD DVD, won't ask for any alterations, and start releasing beautiful movies galore, like *that*?
Or... are you only proposing a specific other format to disappear? One who's demise wouldn't cause you much pain, but would only to other consumers than yourself?
Note that a combi-player will help to preserve all current SDVD/BD/HD DVD collections!

I am format neutral - it's many of the studios, that's who are not!
And a few fanboys and followers.

Re: Weekly hi def sales numbers - Nielsen/VideoScan
Combo players are dead in the water, but they'll be available for the HD DVD boys who want to save space. And I'm sure there will be HD DVD releases for some time to appease early adopters.
HD DVD heralds it's cheaper players as their champion and somehow expects the most expensive option (combo players) will be their savior?
Blu-ray only has to worry about one studio chaniging policy to release on Blu-ray, and chances are by the time the war is truly Universal will be neutral anyway.

You realize you can get that LG combo readily on eBay, right?
I know they should have a better one soon, but combo players, or at least one has been here for a while.

Yep, I know that. I'm just saying that there should be a flood of different combo players coming out - ideally, all players should be a combo unit.
