Really if you and Cees and a few others think HDM can't do any better by a single format, then on what earth does it have a chance by being 2 competing formats splitting the customerbase?
|
Really misrepresenting my position to make your point.
I didn't say they cannot do better: on the contrary, I argued that we need a combi-player, and fast! And I also said they can do a lot better by all abandoning the exclusivity.
But they probably won't, so combi-player it has to be.

Absolutely not.
Panasonic was the one threatning LG with a lawsuit over their intellectual property in Blu-ray. They have a LOT of infrastructure in BD. JVC is related.
Pioneer has BDA spokespeople.
Philips is Sony's partner.

They are certainly not making any sales on the BD side of the house. With LG and soon Samsung releasing Combo players, I would expect Pioneer and the others to follow suit.

Why would Japanese companies with I.P. in Blu-ray follow Korean companies that do not?

Re: Weekly hi def sales numbers - Nielsen/VideoScan
So what you're saying is: it's the manufacturers who prevent the format war from being ended.
Perhaps so, but I think they will fail in the end.

The format war is the only possible reason the HD disc market isn't going to be profitable and unless the format war ends soon, that won't change in my opinion.
|
No matter how many people say that, the same couple people keep coming back saying it's not true. Let's just wait a bit for the usual suspects to chime in.
|
Haha, they have spoken, and you can almost feel the pessimism.
One could get the impression that certain members would rather have both formats fail then to have the one they prefer lose.

How about the obvious. To turn a profit.

Toshiba HD-XA2, HD Add-on, Panasonic DMP-BD10A Pioneer VSX-94TXH, Panasonic PT-AE 2000U 1080p (delivered but not mounted yet) 252 HD DVDs, 65 BD DVDs, and over 1560 - SD DVDs and going down New buying strategy - I will continue to buy Universal and Paramount HD DVD's, but if it available in both formats, Blu-ray now gets my purchase.

That is because the same few people 'usual suspects' bring up the topic to begin with. Whenever low numbers are spoken about, these 'usual suspects' are sure to bring up the format war as the reason.

Yes, and always with the same "solution": make one format disappear (not "theirs", of course: let other people suffer).
While two formats not a war doth make!

Blockbuster purchasing inventory for the stores will be huge to the total Blu-ray sales. Just assuming 200 titles each store and you have 290,000 immediately and 1,000 each store will add 1,450,000 which surely has to happen by the end of the first year. This will almost double total sales of the format at the current rate for the year. If the stores can't start with an average of 2 each for a hundred different titles, I can't imagine it will be worth carrying.

Are those N/V sales numbers not direct consumers sales, but only retailers (stock) orders?

I'm glad I made you feel young again Jason. I'm sorry (not really) if my opinion that Toshiba players are 'el cheapo' offends you but I won't be brow beaten into changing my personal opinion by you, thanks very much.
Your post indicates that you were somewhat riled but you'll have to take that up with Toshiba and their sell it fast, sell it cheap mentality.
