These "format war drive-bys"...

I could live without the retohric as well, but there have now been two HD DVD reviews in two days on High-Def Digest (Daylight and Liar, Liar) that site merely par or sub-par PQ. How many more before we can call this a trend?

I agree that many of the Universal releases have been par (not sub-par). But Par does not mean bad. My guess is that sooner or later they will remaster many of their films and it will be double dipping time (as it will be with the other studios.)

Re: Weekly hi def sales numbers - Nielsen/VideoScan
I'm sure we'll see some double-dipping at some point with a few titles, but I don't think we'll see that much. I think studios will focus their time and resources on new titles (whether catalog or brand new releases) instead of re-doing previous ones. They really need to boost the title selection for more mass adoption.

Why? I'm not seeing how there is a correlation. Universal can fill the shelves (or not, since retailers like Best Buy seem to be pulling back on selling catalog titles they don't feel are "major" enough in store) with their back catalog on HD-DVD, but that doesn't mean they are selling. What are the chances that titles like Sneakers will sell over 2,000 copies (or 1,000 even)? (not a knock against Sneakers - I bought it myself). Universal is getting product out there - there's a reason they aren't putting alot of effort into those releases. They know they aren't going to sell well. If they have a decent transfer on-hand, we'll get a good looking HD-DVD. If they don't, we'll get an HD-DVD as good as that transfer. And just so this doesn't turn into an HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray debate, yes, I am sure there are catalog titles on Blu-Ray that don't sell much (if at all) better.
Whatever misgivings there are about Videoscan numbers, they are still more concrete than counting the number of titles on the shelf or on the release calendar and equating that to how successful a format is. Right now, it's about all we've got.

Re: Weekly hi def sales numbers - Nielsen/VideoScan
Is it not fact that BluRay is out selling HD-DVD by a big margin?
That means BluRay is winning, no?
More studios on board + more players sold + more movie sales = winning, right? Seems simple to me.
And please don't try and spin the old HD-DVD percentages thing, cuz it's BS. Actual movie sales put money in the pockets of the studios, not percentages. And so what if the VideoScan thing doesn't take into account online retailers. You trying to say that BluRays are only purchased in brick and mortar shops? All the HD-DVDs are being bought in the places that VideoScan doesn't cover? Nice one.
Guess what...

I can only assume that Planet Earth will get thrown back at that question. That one title outselling it's Blu-Ray counterpart is like the sun coming up over the horizon.

Is what happens is that both sides will find some way to discount any numbers that favor the other. But, let's say the VideoScan numbers are wrong. Doesn't matter. They are printed in an industry trade magazine and they matter to the industry. The Nielsen ratings system for television can hardly claim accuracy - they don't know what every person is watching. Doesn't matter. Veronica Mars could have 6 million viewers a week, but if Nielsen says it's 2 million... see ya! That being said, I would imagine the VideoScan data is WAY more accurate than the television ratings system.

Who knows what percentages are being sold retail vs. online? Given the relatively few number of units sold, there very well could be a large percentage sold on-line. I don't think those who only feel the need to support HD-DVD would like those number, either, though. It's an unknown, so it can be used for whatever purposes the fanboys on either side see fit.
Like the PS3 sales - the PS3 is/isn't a Blu-Ray player depending on the argument. If you want to talk about software attach rate, the PS3 is a Blu-Ray player. If you want to talk about hardware sold, it's not.

Re: Weekly hi def sales numbers - Nielsen/VideoScan
Wow! That was a massive drop.
I am a little surprised that not one of the Universal HD DVD catalog releases from 6/12 cracked the Top 10. If BD can hold its own against the upcoming HD DVD-heavy slates, then I really don't see much hope for HD DVD from here on out.

Re: Weekly hi def sales numbers - Nielsen/VideoScan
Wasn't that 2:1 before? BD falling back? Or HD DVD gaining?
