Two new BBC releases planned

Looks like the success of Planet Earth has prompted BBC to announce two new HD and BD releases, 'Galapagos' and 'A Room with a View'.

Quote:
Following the extraordinary success of 'Planet Earth,' BBC Video is apparently planning to bring its next two high-def releases, 'Galapagos' and 'A Room with a View' to Blu-ray and HD DVD this fall.

  • Toshiba HD-XA2, HD Add-on, Panasonic DMP-BD10A
  • Pioneer VSX-94TXH, Panasonic PT-AE 2000U 1080p (delivered but not mounted yet)
  • 252 HD DVDs, 65 BD DVDs, and over 1560 - SD DVDs and going down
  • New buying strategy - I will continue to buy Universal and Paramount HD DVD's, but if it available in both formats, Blu-ray now gets my purchase.

Re: Two new BBC releases planned

I hope they don't expect to re-create the sales of Planet Earth with these 2 releases. Galapagos will sell decently, but because it's specific to a certain area - it won't attract as many people.

"A Room With a View" is a headscratcher. Most people bought Planet Earth because it's a great "showpiece" for HD... ARWAV (even with nice cinematography and as much as I like it) is a British period piece directed by Ivory and isn't exactly something people will rush out to purchase on HD.

Love ARWAV, but as was pointed out in another thread, it has had at least two previous releases. I have the one that was part of the Merchant Ivory Collection, and when I buy Hi Def discs I will not be double dipping for this one.

Re: Two new BBC releases planned

The 2 disc Warner BBC set of ARWAV was a huge improvment over the initial (Image?) release, but iirc there were several instances of PAL-like ghosting.
I don't remember if there was a pitch issue though.

In any case, baring a botched transfer, I'll be upgrading to the HD DVD version. The film has become one of my all time favorite romantic comedies and I will be thrilled to own it in the finest version possible. The vistas of the English and Italian countryside, along with Florence, should look damned nice.

As for Galapagos, we will no doubt be all the studios (and independants) going thru their catalogs for nature docs thanks to Planet Earth.
If Sony hasn't resceduled Winged Migration yet, I'm sure they are seriously looking into. PE was/is a fantastic production with some spectacular eye candy- but I didn't buy pick it up just because everyone was raving about the visuals. That was one reason, but the other was the presence of Attenbourough and the praise the series got for its narrative scope and coherence.
Between this and Microcosom (sd, but it looks like HD for the most part), I think I'm pretty set for nature material for a while.

Well, PAL/NTSC issues should be absent on an HD release, at least in theory.

I don't recall any PAL ghosting issues with the latest release of A Room With a View. I just recall the image looking miles better than the Image release.

I've got my copy packed away, but I'll try to dig it out and give it another look see. Maybe I was remembering wrong.

Just watched the 2005 version of Pride & Predjudice last night for the first time, and I can't wait for that one to come out now also.
