The Digital Bits - "Officially Blu-ray" Soapbox

Hey guys, sorry if this is in the wrong section. I swore I wouldn't bite at this but it just really got blood going this morning. Bill Hunt at The Digital Bits has posted his latest attack on the HD-DVD format;

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articl...oap060107.html

I don't consider myself part of this format war. I own an HD-DVD player & a Blu-ray player. They both have their good points, and their downsides. I have the best of both worlds, and when it comes down to it the films are what really matter. I love my Blu-ray discs & my HD-DVD discs equally (those damn HD-DVD combos are another matter entirely though).

The thing is, he's basically having a pop at Harry Knowles of Ain't it Cool News, over his recent decision to buy an HD-DVD player instead of a Blu-ray player.

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/32838

To Bill's credit he does make some good points. However during the course of the diatribe he manages to fall fowl of the same thing he's attacking Harry over, namely recommending one format over the other!!

A few choice snippets;

"When you look at the facts and trends, it seem to us here at The Bits that the ONLY thing the HD-DVD camp has to crow about right now is that they're the cheaper option."

Excuse me??!! You're supposed to be experts on this! What about no region coding on HD-DVD discs (a huge bonus)? What about exclusive support from Universal (no small-time player)? What about European companies like Studio Canal deciding to put their titles out on HD-DVD instead of Blu-ray? What about current titles that are only available at the moment on HD-DVD like Harry Potter, Batman Begins, The Matrix and upcoming titles like Blade Runner (not yet officially announced for Blu-ray) & Hot Fuzz? What about higher quality versions of films like T2 & Total Recall, versus the poor Blu-ray transfers?? What about Warner holding off on many Blu-ray titles until the whole BD Java thing is sorted out??

"With AACS already smarting from a series of cracks, hacks and work-arounds that have exposed existing high-def titles (including The Matrix) to copying, does anyone really think those studios are going to start releasing their titles on HD-DVD format, especially when Blu-ray is already dominating software sales? Again, there's no incentive whatsoever."

Sorry Bill you're just flat out wrong here! Any protection can be cracked given long enough. There's already hacked & copied Blu-ray software freely available on Newsgroups. Hell both POTC discs are freely downloadable if you know where to look. Blu-ray is NOT protected from copying!! It just takes a little more effort, is all.

"We'll continue to enjoy HD-DVD discs and review them too, for those who may be interested."

For those who MAY be interested???!! Oh thanks a bunch for that slap across the face Bill. We wouldn't want to think you were putting yourself to any trouble being forced to review those damn HD-DVD discs! It must be so awful for you..

"It would be nice to think that we could just stay neutral in this thing."

Stay neutral?? You've never BEEN neutral in this thing! However you can be neutral, here's how.. I own both an HD-DVD player & a Blu-ray player. If a film I want comes out on the HD-DVD format, I buy it. If it comes out on the Blu-ray format then I buy it on that. You don't HAVE to take sides. The only people creating this format war are the journalists, and the corporate spin doctors on either side. Many film fans are busy enjoying great HD from both formats in their front rooms, even as I type this

Sorry to go on so long, but this "soapbox" post on The Digital Bits really got me rattled!! It's one thing for Bill Hunt to have a pop at Harry Knowles for choosing an HD format. It's another thing entirely to write a post that ends up doing exactly what you're criticizing him for, namely recommending one HD format over another.

As I say I consider myself format neutral, but misleading journalism needs to be shown up for what it is. Either format is a great introduction to the HD experience.

Long live HD (in whatever format)!!

The fact of the matter is, that Harry Knowles was dead wrong in the majority of the "facts" that he posted regarding HD DVD. He managed to state that BD only has 62 titles on the market and HD DVD has over 500, amongst other fierce inaccuracies. Someone had to step up and correct his claims and I applaud Bill for doing so AND taking a stance to firmly support one format. You may not agree with Bill, but by choosing a side, Bill has done nothing more than most of us here have already done. He has no reason to be impartial and he firmly believes that BD is the superior format, as many of us do.

Bill made his decision based on FACTS, not by looking at absurd data and complete falsehoods as Harry did.

Completely agree , Jon .
I have removed DB from my 'Favourites' folder and will not be visiting again as the site has been dying IMO since this whole stupid war began with their obvious agenda and this 'Final Solution' just makes the skin crawl .

Whichever ( or both ) format(s) you support , we are all HD fans and that should unite us . I think its too late condemn either side's supporters to 'defeat' and being out of pocket entirely as a result of industry intransigence , the formats should survive at least until HD downloading becomes more widespread.
There is quite a good point-by-point reply in a similar thread at avs here :

See post #96

Can I be the first to ask that the 'Digital Bits' buttons that are littered about Htf be removed ? I no longer think it should be recommended to noobs.

They may get lots of hits as a result of Bill Hunt's nonsense in the short term , but I think his ' confused e-mail writers' would be better served seeking guidance elsewhere.

Re: The Digital Bits - "Officially Blu-ray" Soapbox

Over the years I've always looked at Bill Hunt's site with respect and made sure it was daily reading.

Regrettably his increasing, pro-Sony (there is no other way to look at it) stand is far from objective. IMO he's not even using mere facts, and it's particularly odd when you consider HD-DVD sales a week ago made a LOT of press (front page of Yahoo in fact, never mind Aint it Cool).

I don't think it's just a coincidence. IMO he is absolutely a shill for Sony and this was timed to throw a cold shower on the lot of consumers who bought players last week. There's no other way around it, he's trying to curry favor for Sony's inferior (sorry, I do believe right now it IS an inferior product to HD-DVD) rushed-to-market product. How you could even adopt the viewpoint he has when the PS3 is going down as one of the technological Edsels of this generation (in terms of sales numbers) so far is just laughable.

I have lost all respect for him and The Digital Bits.

Truthfully at the end of the day, it really won't matter what Blu-ray Bill thinks. The way these HD discs are not really taking off....it seems like it doesn't matter what we think either.

Yes I agree Harry was way wrong in many of his comments. I perfer Blu-ray on many occassions too. I recently purchased The Fountain on Blu-ray rather than HD-DVD, because of the awful "Combo format" HD-DVD discs.

However, HD-DVD has a lot more going for it then Bill seems to want to point out. I'm just expecting some balanced journalism here. The Digital Bits post was just as misleading to people getting into HD as the Ain't it Cool News post, in it's own way.

I'm not hating on Bill Hunt here. To be fair he did seem to be getting into HD-DVD last year, and recognized that the early Blu-ray players/transfers had lots of problems. Plus, he did watch the whole Matrix HD-DVD boxset in it's entirety before posting his review to make sure every aspect was covered. However lately he seems to be going back to his own battle cries of let's get together to bring the HD-DVD format down.

The recent news of the HD-DVD price cut leading to heightened player sales were reported on the site in a derogatory way, with Bill stating Toshiba were "crowing" about increased sales. Why can't he just state that HD-DVD players are selling more units due to the reduced price? Why the constant sniping??

Re: The Digital Bits - "Officially Blu-ray" Soapbox

i have read harrys site and bills site for years and i have a few things to say. harry needs to stick to movie reviews and scoops, thats what hes good at. sounds like harry took advise from some half-trained best buy employee.

bill's site has been neutral in this war up until now, and i applaud him for it, but the time has come for everyone to make a stand and be honest

the best hd dvd can do is make this war drag on and on. its on its dying end and one studio switch will sink it for sure. i dont care if they give away players, they dont have the contents. content content content

blu ray should have been the better choice, with lots of problems has finally sorted itself out. they were shooting themselves in the foot since they started. blu ray has too many exclusive studios and in the end, the contents is what sells the brand.

Then you're applauding him for something he hasn't done! Actually Bill's been very obviously pro Blu-ray since before the formats were even launched. I remember him visiting one of the early trade shows and gushing about how Blu-ray was going to be his format of choice.

After reading the editorial, I think plenty of "spin" has been applied to what was said.
