I can get all movies at this time. Give me the opportunity to pick which version/format I want to buy in, and keep the price reductions coming.
Since I do not buy into your list of cons, I see little negative at this time to this competition.

Re: The Digital Bits - "Officially Blu-ray" Soapbox
I have to agree with Thomas here. So far this war has been nothing but good for me. I've been able to buy into both formats for just a little over $600 with in the first year of introduction. My first DVD player was $700.
Yes I'd say the war has been very good to me. Just call me a war profiteer!

LOL . I believe most of these debate points come from books of one-liners supplied by both camps, much like watching talking heads in a political debate.

David, you particular format of choice can't even get all of it's own exclusive studios to reliably and consistently release content. Don't you think the BD camp should get its own house in order before it starts making over-arching, pie in the sky promises
|
25GB BD will do most films that have been released on HD DVD 30GB.
The hold up with particular titles on BD has been due to:
* 50GB replication getting up to speed (HD DVD can't do 50GB anyway)
* Fox waiting for BD+ on BD (HD DVD can't offer this level of protection)
* BD-J which is now finally being released (yes, long time coming, but finally here).

Re: The Digital Bits - "Officially Blu-ray" Soapbox
but the fact is it's basically one year later and we are still hearing the old Bd mantra of "just wait till _____ happens, then things 'll be different".
It's one excuse, and one more moved goal post, after another with that format.

Re: The Digital Bits - "Officially Blu-ray" Soapbox
Paul,
Fox's delay with their titles due to their worry about copy protection affects HD DVD more severely than it does BD.
And where are the 50GB HD DVDs that Disney is so excited to use for titles like Pirates of the Caribbean?

Re: The Digital Bits - "Officially Blu-ray" Soapbox
David, we simply don't agree on the speculative cause for Foxs inability to release significant content on the format for the last...oh...year.
They started late, and prior to that the Br boosters were all saying "just wait till Fox comes with its big guns...game over pal"
Another one was the impact of the PS3. "Just wait till the PS3 gets here...game over man"
Another was Bd50s "just wait till the Bd 50s are ready, then Fox and Disney will be releasing all of their big guns and then it's game over, man!"
congratulations on getting the Pirates movies. I would love to be watching those sometime soon, but even $600 is too much when there isn't much beyond that I'm interested in that I don't already have access to on the player that was 50% cheaper.
Nothing, NOTHING so far, has translated into Blu-ray having or displaying an overwhelming superiority in the market place. Sure, they are king of the ant hill for week to week sales. Big deal. a few thousand titles give or take a few.
What are the excuses going to be when only a half dozen titles move over 100,000 units in Q4, and all the rest are still mired in sales of only 10-20,000- or much worse?
Q4 will certainly be interesting when two of the biggest movies (including Transfomers which just might be THE biggest) of the year are released for both formats, and one of(if not THE) biggest sleepers is released on the sub $300 format.

There's a thread over at AVS that lists the actual disc capacity used by 48 random HD DVD titles. Of these 48, 21 use more than 25GB.
