Re: The Digital Bits - "Officially Blu-ray" Soapbox
Wow, Mack. That position comes way too natural for you. You been to jail? Or is that how you paid off your student films?
Cheers,
Jason

I hear you there. If the Blu-ray hadn't been an open box deal I wouldn't have one yet. I just stumbled on it.

a little off-subject, but how does the PS3 do on upconverting with the newest upgrade?
|
I'll comport with the rest and mention that I find the new upscaling in the PS3 to be outstanding... though I'm not sure it betters the Oppo on all titles. Oddly, it seems that with some DVDs the PS3 looks better, and with others I prefer the Oppo. I wonder if the scaling algorithms respond differently to different types of image content?
In any case, I'd love to see the scaling on the latest and greatest Toshiba. I was *very* impressed with the scaling of the A1 when I saw it on my friend's 1080p projector: it was the best upscaling I had ever seen outside of a high-end dedicated processor (better than HTCP).

yep, baby in the house makes hygeine and hair maintenance challenging!
oops!
Bill Hunt that no good, double crossing, slimy...
but actually, I tested SW: ep. IV upscaled (which looks Amazing btw: better than Ep. III IMHO) and thought the PS3 has just a slight bit more detail.

I have owned both the XA1 and now currently own the XA2. As these where my first upconverting players I have owned (I just had a real hard time retiring my Pioneer Elite LD/DVD player. Loved those rosewood side panels ), I can only speak to the difference between the Toshiba's, and not upconverting in general.
My personal opinion is that the XA2 does a more consistently better job then my XA1 did. I know I have seen many complaints about watching SD DVD's on a large screen (in my case, 106") I can honestly say, while not any where in the same Quality of even my lesser High Def disks, watching the SD disks on my Tosh is still a pleasure and has extended their usability.
Dave and DaViD, thanks for the response.

Toshiba HD-XA2, HD Add-on, Panasonic DMP-BD10A Pioneer VSX-94TXH, Panasonic PT-AE 2000U 1080p (delivered but not mounted yet) 252 HD DVDs, 65 BD DVDs, and over 1560 - SD DVDs and going down New buying strategy - I will continue to buy Universal and Paramount HD DVD's, but if it available in both formats, Blu-ray now gets my purchase.

And yet, and yet... let's not proceed this way any further.

Re: The Digital Bits - "Officially Blu-ray" Soapbox
David,
I recently purchased the A2 and it does an amazing job of upconverting. As my hetrosexual lifeparter, Mack, mentioned - Star Wars Episode 4 looks simply stunning. In fact it looks better than the HBO or Cinemax HD presentations I've caught. Much more detail and deeper blacks. I also thought King Kong SD looked incredible. But even the new anamorphic Big looked great.
I absolutely love the A2 and wish I had more time to watch movies, but I'm way too busy writing incredibly raunchy immature posts.
Cheers,
Jason
