First numbers for POTC and Matrix
Well, it looks like the first weeks sales numbers are in for both Pirates films and the Matrix set.
Quote:
According to market research estimates from Home Media Magazine, the two "Pirates" films sold a combined total of a little less than 47,000 units, while the "Matrix" sets sold about 13,900 units.

So lets see. The two biggest releases for each format were able to muster up a very disappointing show. Assuming each POTC release sold equally, the means these highly valued releases were only able to sell 23,500 copies each spread around 3.5 million BD player owners, and the hotly advertised Matrix sets could only muster 14,000 in sales.
These are very dismal numbers indeed.

Re: First numbers for POTC and Matrix
You cannot assume that everyone who owns a PS3 has an HDTV, You cannot assume that everyone who owns a PS3 is interested in HD Media double dips for a markup.
At best you can take the number of BR Players sold, and use the percentage of X-box 360 drives sold to approximate the number of PS3 owners who are willing to and able to buy HD media to approximate a figure of how many PS3's are being used as BR Players, then post numbers.

Re: First numbers for POTC and Matrix
Release the first Matrix separately. That should produce interesting numbers.

Re: First numbers for POTC and Matrix
Exactly. I'm not so interested in the sequels, but would certainly consider The Matrix in HD.

Re: First numbers for POTC and Matrix
I think this finding might be a bit screwed.. because I could pirates 1 and 2 at target and other places. I had a harder time finding the matrix boxset.. when I did find it.. it was only the complete set, not the ultimate edition.. I do remember when warner bros released the boxset on standard dvd, it also did not do that well either.

Re: First numbers for POTC and Matrix
well, one thing is- these both will be 'evergreen' titles. They'll always sell as more people adopt the formats.
And I know there was a lot of enthusiasm for the Matrix sets on these forums, but I just never saw anyway these were going to approach the sales numbers of the singularly sold, and fresher, Pirates films. Especially with the latest sequel being hyped concurrently.
Not to mention that many of the Matirx fans, I'm sure have already double dipped on this title on sd.
But- given the lower cost of HD DVD production, coupled with the higher price tag, I think Warner probably realized as much net profit from the Matrix sales, as Disney (or Bd) did from the Pirates films- actually, now that I think of it, I'm SURE they did, as Disney has some added production costs due to all the interactive frills they tossed on those two. Sony may have had a cap on the rep costs that helped the bottom line, but Disney still sunk some money into these release above and beyond the traditional authoring and compression expenses. Warner merely ported over already paid for content.

Never did and never said I did, just pointed out a fact. You can make of it what you will.

Re: First numbers for POTC and Matrix
I'll be picking up both Pirates at a later date, either with my PS3, or with my Panasonic (in box).

Re: First numbers for POTC and Matrix
a slightly different view of the sales numbers from The Hollywood Reporter (via yahoo news)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070601/film_nm/hidef_dc_1

In dollars there was more parity because the single-disc "Pirates" releases fetched about $25 in stores, while the "Matrix" sets, each with all three movies in the franchise, were priced significantly higher. The five-disc "The Ultimate Matrix Collection" lists for $119.99, while "The Complete Matrix Trilogy" (three discs) goes for $99.99.
|
So 47000 (Pirates on BD) * $25 = $1,175,000
and 13900 (Matrix sets on HD DVD) * $100 = 1,390,000
Assuming no one bought the Ultamite Matrix, the HD DVDs outsold Pirates on BD.
