Here's some release news I just found while searching the web that I haven't seen posted yet related to the IFA Berlin show. The information at the following site is from Variety (I checked variety.com also but the original article there requires a subscription).

Another Fox title, Kingdom of Heaven director's cut, will be the first dual layer 50 gb title and it will be released on Nov. 14 in the U.S.

Fox Announces Its Blu-ray Slate Inc- The 1st BD-50, Loseless Audio, Java, & MPEG-4-
Fox Announces Its Blu-ray Slate
Quote:
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment today is expected to announce an ambitious slate of Blu-ray Disc (BD) titles, becoming the last of the five big studios supporting the next-generation optical-disc format to unveil specific releases and release dates.
The nine titles will be released worldwide, not just in North America. Topping the list: Ice Age: The Meltdown, which will be released the same day as the standard DVD, Nov. 21 in the United States and Canada and the week of Nov. 13 in Australia and select European countries.
Also on the list: the director’s cut of Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven, due Nov. 14 in North America, Australia and Europe and June 10 in Japan. The release will be one of the industry’s first dual-layer BDs, to accommodate the nearly four-hour running time.
“I reviewed [the film] on Blu-ray Disc, and I was astounded,” Scott said. “It was like looking through a window of clarity. It was the most impressive thing I’ve ever seen.”
Coming to stores on the same day are the seven other Fox titles: Behind Enemy Lines, Fantastic Four, Kiss of the Dragon, The Omen (666), The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Speed and The Transporter.
In the United States, all titles will list for $39.98 — about $10 more than initial BD releases by Lionsgate, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video. Unlike most of the early Blu-ray releases from other studios, a number of Fox titles take full advantage of the format’s high-definition technology and Java-based interactivity, with AVC (MPEG-4 compression) and HD “Lossless” Audio.
Fox titles with AVC are Behind Enemy Lines, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Speed.
Only one other studio, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, is releasing BD titles with the advanced codec: Eight Below and Great Raid, both due Sept. 19.
Fox also is expected to announce today the release of four BD titles from MGM, which it is now distributing. The Usual Suspects and Windtalkers are due Nov. 28, followed on Dec. 5 by Rocky and Bulletproof Monk.
The timing of the Fox and MGM releases coincides with the expected release of the Sony PlayStation 3 video game console, which Blu-ray backers believe will give the fledgling format the momentum to soar past rival HD DVD.

Can't see it happening until there's a definite indication that Sony's going to have BD-50 discs in fullscale production by then. Not to mention even if they do, to pick the movie KOH?? Personally I thought the movie just sucked. Orlando Blooms acting was a joke.

Re: New Blu-ray titles: Kingdom of Heaven 1st 50 gb dual layer
Will KOH include all the extras from the 4 disc SD-DVD set? Even on a dual layer Blu-rry disc, I doubt they'll be able to fit the extended cut of the film along with lossless audio and not have to drop at least some of the extras. Unless they make it a 2-disc set.

Then there's the issue of current BD players being unable to play dual-layer Blu-ray discs.
Careful man! There's a beverage here!

Re: New Blu-ray titles: Kingdom of Heaven 1st 50 gb dual layer
Some Fox titles are using AVC (or MPEG-4) compression so I would think they would be able to squeeze it all into 50Gb.

Re: New Blu-ray titles: Kingdom of Heaven 1st 50 gb dual layer
Hey Folks,
I want to share some of the insider information on the 50 gig issue according to Bill at the digital bits as well as what's been shared in private to myself and others at AVS...
It seems that while BD 50 replication still has a way to go to reach prime-time production yields, the manufacturing is ready for some limited release even now. The real hold up (as indicated by some posts here) has been that without any 50gig ROM software available until now, the hardware manufacturers haven't had a chance to work out 50 gig compatibility/playback issues until just recently.
Pioneer, Sony, and others with yet-to-be-released players are moving along just fine and will be releasing players that provide full 50 gig playback right off the bat. However, the Samsung player on the market may have problems with some 50 gig discs. HOWEVER, these issues should be fully addressed via firmware updates, so they shouldn't present a problem for any current owners. Samsung expects to have the firmware updates for 50 gig interoperability ready by the time 50gig software is ready for release.
Naturally, we'll have to wait and see the timing of how all these issues play out as they evolve, but according to industry sources things are expected to work out well.
Those are all the details I can share and I can't discuss any specific sources. However, Bill Hunt at the bits has posted some good comments and when I asked some industry folks about these topics at AVS they all confirmed what he was saying.

So then my question is how does MPEG4 compare to VC-1
