Blu-Ray "scratch-proof" coating is MIA

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=689750

You guessed it. The "scratch-proof" TDK Durabis coating that was supposed to offset the more error-prone Blu-Ray surface is... not there!

as long as it is in the specs, it doesn't have to show up in the actual product.
This is about the future, dammit !

besides, by the time the disc is rendered unreadable a superbit VC 1 version will be announced.
all part of the masterplan

It seems that substitute coatings are being used. We'll have to see how durable production BD discs are in actual use.

Does HD-DVD have a similar type coating?

I'd be curious to see if rental companies like Netflix have a higher/lower turnover than normal with BD discs due to surface scratches.

HDDVD doesn't need the same type of coating, because the plastic protecting the data is much thicker than BD. It's like regular DVD.

Unfortunately that's what it looks like.

Never knew that the density of the HD-DVD is as the same as DVD. Putting that in perspective with BD not only it's expensive to manufacturer, you also have to careful to when you handle BD.
