Sony Announces New ES Blu-ray Player (DNR in a Box?)

Sony Announces New ES Blu-ray Player

On the video side, it will feature an HD Reality Enhancer which continually analyzes the video stream to sharpen edges and reduce film grain.

Just what I need!

Something to continually add artificial-edge-enhancement and across-the-board Digital-Noise-Reduction, to filter my 1080P movies!

There goes the true meaning of film.

Is it April already?

How about a player that just plays what is on the disc? I think the content provider should be determining how these discs should look and sound, not some crappy electronic brain.

I think this is GREAT news, provided this player (and any that follow in its footsteps) allow those 'features' to be turned off.

My opinion is that DNR and EE functions should reside in the user's display and/or player. That way, content providers can put an accurate representation of the film on their discs -- those who want the film to look correct can play it back as-is without EE/DNR, while the grain-haters can 'enhance' the picture to their hearts' content. Win-win, IMO.

It's an additional cost for what looks to be a top-of-the-line player that provides the best audio and video processing at an additional cost that "grain-haters" can pay.

Those that want an accurate representation of film from HD media and get the best audio and video processing available and don't want to throw extra money away IMHO, on a needless feature, should look elsewhere for a top quality player.

I shudder to think what an alread DNR'd title such as Patton would look like on this player.

..then you´re going to love that new Toshiba (DVD-player).

Seriously, are these (with Sony) something that you can turn "on" and "off"? I mean they can add these silly "features" and write fancy "marketing blurbs", as long as they´re *optional*. Perhaps that´s the case with this player?
