Panasonic DMP-BD30K & Onkyo 805 Receiver not happy together?

Hi all,

I recently bought the Panny DMP-BD30K so I could move my PS3 into another room. I have the Onkyo 805 receiver hooked up with HDMI cables. I am only getting 2-channel sound on all the blu-ray dvds. I've tried 3:10 to Yuma (the PS3 did 7.1 PCM) and Hairspray (DTS-MA 7.1). I also tried X3 and everything is playing 2-channel. The player is set to output bitstream and multi channel. The video runs via HDMI to a Panasonic 1080p projector.

I have not done any firmware upgrades yet (this is right out of the box). But any other suggestions? I'm really wanting the DTS-HD audio (after getting spoiled on PCM and TrueHD).

Thanks for any suggestions.

FIrst, upgrade the firmware. THis is a must.

Then, know that the Panasonic will only bitstream the HD codecs, it will not convert them to PCM. The LPCM that comes out of the HDMI will be downmixed to DD if the soundtrack is DD+/TrueHD/DTS-HD. In order to get the full HD audio to your Onkyo, you have to set the following:

Digital Audio Output - Set all to Bitstream
BD-Video Secondary Audio - Off
PCM Down Conversion - Off

Thanks Jeff. I do have all those setting activated.

I also did the firmware upgrade yesterday. It's still only giving me 2 channel. Do you know if there's somewhere on the receiver that needs to be set? I didn't see anything in the manual. I'm at a lose on this one...I'm ready to just return the Panasonic player.

There is a setting for the default listening modes, but I would imagine they aren't set to default to 2 channel. The only other thing I can think of is if you do not have all your speakers defined on the Onkyo (either manually or via Audessey), then the receiver could only be set up for 2 channels.

I just thought of something else:

You might try turning the "HDMI Audio Out" setting to "Off". This is found in the "HDMI Setup" menu. What could be happening is your TV is overriding your receiver and telling the BD player that it is a 2 channel device. Once you turn off the "HDMI Audio Out", there will be no chance for the TV to override the receiver.

Thanks Jeff. That totally fixed the problem. Once I tuned the HDMI out to off, the sound came through in glorious DTS-MA 7.1!

I just finished my theater room with a 14 foot screen and finally a room big enough for 7.1 sound. Sweet!

Thanks again!
