PS3 Noise Reduction Modes - worth looking at?

As many here know, one of the additions with the new 2.2 firmware for the PS3 is a Mosquito noise reduction. This joins two other types of noise reduction that quite frankly, I've never touched.

My thought has always been that using these types of processing will alter the image, and perhaps not for the better. I've had my set calibrated by our own Gregg Loewen a couple of times, and leave it the way he set it. I tend to not use any processing modes with my players either.

Yet, I've been reading on a couple of boards that wondrous results occur with a PS3 when you turn all three filters up to 3 (the max setting).

What do you more knowledgeable folk think? Leave these new-fangled things alone for a purer image, or is there really a worthwhile performance boost here?

I'm running a 53" Pioneer CRT RPTV, BTW.

Give it a try and let us know what you think!

I'll try to remember to do the same once I update the firmware.

Isn't it only for DVD playback, not BD? I forget the details now. For upconverting DVD, maybe it'll actually help. Of course, I can't test that out since I don't have a display w/ HDMI.

It makes a fair amount of difference on The Simpsons DVDs, which are sourced from analog tape.

Neither do I, actually - 1080i component for me.

I think you might be right about it only being for DVD - the option to turn these modes on are only visible when you put a DVD in - put in a blu and you won't be able to access the options.

I'll have a play this weekend, but it may well be that the benefits are seen more readily in upconverting mode & HDMI, in which case, I might not see a thing!
