Re: A Blu-ray player [Sony BDP-S550] that will do EVERYTHING! (Verified)

I am ready to buy, but can anyone clarify that the S550 will internally decode and transfer to the analog outs both Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD? In another forum two individuals returned their 550's because they would not decode DTS HD signal. One guy called Sony and after much holding he was finally told that it did not pass DTS HD. Can anyone who owns one verify this for me? I want to buy this unit but ONLY if it decodes both and passes that to analog 5.1 outs. Thanks!

Re: A Blu-ray player [Sony BDP-S550] that will do EVERYTHING! (Verified)

I've justed hooked up my Sony via component video and optical for audio. I stuck in Ironman and after making some audio changes I got it working. I made the following selections:
Audio Output Priority: Coaxial/optical
Audio HDMI: Auto
BD Audio Setting: Mix
Audio ATT: Off
Dolby Digital: Dolby Digital
DTS: DTS
48kHz/96kHz PCM: 48kHz/96kHz
Audio DRC: Auto
Downmix: Dolby Surround

Ironman sounded fine, then with some trepidation I put in Dr. No. I was unsure if it would play, with all the reported problems. It does play, looks fine, but there's some distortion, quite notable with dialog. I first noticed it when Bond is talking to Moneypenny and it doesn't go away, at least not for the 5 minutes I listened.

Is this an issue with the Bond BR or perhaps with my settings. My receiver is a Sony DA555ES. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks for the added insights Johnny. Glad to hear Dr. No will play. I hope your audio problems are solved. My processor is an older one and I will upgrade shortly. So I'll also be connecting audio via optical.

Yes it has been stated several times, the player decodes all audio and outputs analog.

Hey Tom...check post #154...I have this unit and it sounds great through my Denon 7.1 analog inputs...it also plays regular DVD's fine that my Toshiba A-35 HD DVD player had trouble playing...load times aren't too bad either.
Hope this helps...

How is the upconverting?

The review of the Panny 55 indicates it stupidly doesn't have a dedicated subtitle key on the remote (and I presume there's no universal remote command for it though maybe that's mistaken)---does the 550? Based on that I've canceled my order on the 55 and am looking at the Sony 550 again.

I assume as Boss states that dts HD Master Audio is decoded then sent out the 7.1 Analog outputs as well as Dolby TrueHD? The Panny 55 definitely does this the only question is if the Sony does as well. Watched Casino on Blu-Ray last night, the movie looks awesome on Blu-Ray now need a player to output the dts HD Master Audio - I bet that sounds incredible.

Boss checked the manual. No options for connecting to a processor with 5.1 analog inputs, just shows how to connect to a 7.1 analog in. Anyone else considering this player that has 5.1 ins and how did you connect it??

Quick question: Do I use simple RCA audio cables to connect the 7.1 analog outs to my receiver? Don't have HDMI receiver yet, but do have a 7.1. Or do I use coax?

You can just use the RCA cables...the shorter the better... all these cables just add to the already cluttered rear of my componenets...just not using the surround back speaker jacks on the player should work fine for the 5.1 inputs...you should still get the improved sound qualities.

I see Boss has already answered this. I would add the the manual indicates the Surround Back speakers can be turned off in the player setup. Seems like that would be a good thing to do, maybe it effects how the player determines what sound goes where. I.E. if you turn surround back off, those signals are processed differently. Just a SWAG on my part. The more I think about it, the more I think the back surround signals don't go anywhere when hooking up for 5.1

If it has been indicated already in this thread, can someone point me to it? If I hook up the audio via my 5.1 inputs for Sony DA555ES receiver, what are the best settings for the S550? BTW, I have Bose (gasp!) Acoustimass speakers. I know it's heresy to mention Bose in this forum, but it's what I've got.

I plan on digging through my receiver manual, but is it typical to have to tell a receiver where the sound signals are coming from, or is that automatic?
