Neither of these are realistic or sustainable.
What we are now seeing is reality, not artificiality. New technology costs to adopt early. DVD players were over $1000 dollars when introduced, and still above $500 for the second generation that still could not play Dts, or change layers without glitches. DVD disc were $35-40 just like early HD DVD and Bluray disc. When the markets prices are not pulled down by subsidization(and please do not tell me that toshiba did not subsidize its players, you cannot lose $400 million+ unless you are taking a loss on each player)you will see real world prices being reflected. Its not that bluray prices are going up, its that the market is being cleared of artificially low player prices.
Welcome to the real, unsubsidized world.

I think some people thrive on the drama of all of this, and are suffering from the lack of it.

Re: Blu-Ray Prices Skyward: Not to open old wounds...
Those who really know me here, know I am FAR from the drama need.
I just found it interesting, and it's no secret I preferred the HD-DVD format, although I own both. That's all.
Well..ok...maybe needle a lit bit. BUT only a little.

I paid upwards of that for my Toshiba SD-5109 which still works flawlessly today. (If only $1000 was worth what it was 10 years ago.) I don't, however, remember retail DVD prices over $25. MSRP maybe, but not retail.

Re: Blu-Ray Prices Skyward: Not to open old wounds...
The price is still keeping me from Blu-Ray but I think they will drop.
Look at it this way; reatilers have no incentive to sell you Blu-Ray now. Their incentive is to get rid of all the HD DVD players and titles that are sure to rot on their shelves. When a new customer comes in for hi-def, they want him walking out with HD DVD and coming back in six months for Blu-Ray.

Oh hell i do. FOX was of course the culprit on that front back at the beginning of DVD. When True Lies came out it was about $30 retail! And that was for a damn bare bones, non anamorphic release. Course that was just before the glory days of 50% or so off MSRP for new releases online. I miss those days. But, once again, it couldnt be sustained.

A special edition from Universal like Mallrats (and maybe Apollo 13) was $40.

You're right. We are.
